Catherine Louise Quade, 82, of Chaptico, MD. Passed away peacefully on September 7, 2013 at the Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway, MD. She was born on March 19, 1931 in Oraville, MD. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Franklin and Helen Louise Bruch.
Her life started out very shaky. Her mother developed complications late in her pregnancy and died not long after she was born. Louise was a very sick baby and the doctors gave her zero hope of living. They didn’t know little Louise and her will to live and that God had other plans for her. Her Grandmother Flora Gray Quade Pilkerton gathered the sick baby up from the hospital and brought her to her home, and nursed her into a healthy child. Louise grew up strong and healthy living with her grandmother.
Her father Lewis went on with his life and soon married Mary Morgan and started a new family of his own. They had 5 children; Frankie, Danny, and Bobby, all deceased. Remaining siblings, Norman Burch & Mary Kaye White both live in Helen, Maryland. Though, she visited them occasionally, her home was with her grandmother. Louise attended St. Joseph’s School through the 8th grade. She grew up in the Laurel Grove and Helen area. Her Grandmother also raised another grandchild, Martin Quade (deceased) who was 6 months younger than Louise and she thought of him as her brother. Her Step Grandfather was Robert Pilkerton and she often said that he was the only daddy that she ever knew. She loved him dearly. She grew up a happy child.
Louise had a love for the Lord and was a devout Catholic. She felt so blessed to have a big family that surrounded her. She loved to go to church and as her health started to fail, she watched Sunday morning mass every week.
At the age of 16 she started dating her life love Phillip Rhodie Quade. They were married on March 29, 1948 and made their lifetime home on a farm in Clements, MD, and soon started a family of their own 8 in all. Philip Rhodie, Jr. (Ginger) of Chaptico, MD., Robert Lewis (Brenda) of Park Hall, MD., David Michael, deceased, John Morris (Ruth) of Lexington Park, MD., Mary Lou Wood (Richard) of Mechanicsville, MD., Jerry Aloysius, Deceased (Tina), Christopher Wayne (Helena) of Leonardtown, MD, and Paul Eugene, of Mechanicsville, MD.
Her life was that of a sharecropper Farmer’s wife and a mother and she did a wonderful job at both. Everyday there were three meals on the table at 7AM, 12PM, and 5PM. She was always there to put her kids on the bus and tuck them in at night. That old wringer washer was going almost every day and the clothes were hung on the line to dry. She got her first automatic washer and dryer for her 70th birthday.
Louise never got her driver’s license. She said that the one time she tried to learn how to drive was out in the middle of an open field with one tree and she hit it. So she never thought that there was enough room on the road for her and the other cars. She thought it was safer to always be a passenger.
After 53 years of marriage, Louise lost her beloved Rhodie to cancer in March of 2002. They had a down home loving life together and enjoyed each other’s company when at home or out dancing on Saturday night until the very end. He was the only man she ever loved. She has also known the sorrow of losing two sons, David and Jerry. A grandson Bobby, Jr., and 3 Great grandchildren Joyclyn, Bobby 3rd, and Ethan.
The last 10 years of her life she lived contently in a little apartment beside her son Philip Rhodie, Jr., and his wife Ginger in Chaptico, MD. She cooked Sunday dinner for her kids and grandkids every Sunday and always looked forward to having them come to see her. That was the highlight of her week. There was always a crowd. She was the family go to person and was very actively involved in their lives and none of them know what they will do without her. Thanks to her grandmother nursing her to good health, she was a healthy woman for the first 80 years of her life and developed Leukemia about 2 years ago. It got the best of her. This is quite an accomplishment for a wee babe that the doctors didn’t think had a chance. 8 Children, 27 grandchildren, and about 40 Great Grandchildren, and a lifetime chocked full of love and memories.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, Chaptico, MD., with Rev. Jerry Gamrot officiating. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, MD. Pallbearers will be her grandsons; Philip Rhodie Quade 3rd, Adam Quade, Allan Quade, Richard Wood, Jr., Christopher W. Quade, Jr., and Paul E. Quade, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be her remaining grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice House of St. Mary’s P.O. box 625 Leonardtown, MD 20650, and/ or Our Lady of The Wayside Church P.O. Box 97 Chaptico, MD 20621.
