Obituary for James Foley Mattingly III

James Foley Mattingly, III “Jimmy” died on June 15, 2017 peacefully at his home in Mechanicsville, Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Elizabeth Strickland Mattingly and his father, James Foley Mattingly, II.

He is survived by his wife Karen Fields Mattingly whom he married on May 23, 1992 on the Mattingly farm in Helen, Maryland. Also his children, Timmy Mattingly (Teri), Christina Ferguson (Kevin), Michelle Gwaltney (Jason), and Amanda Tuggle. Grandchildren, Alexis Raley, Eric Raley, Grace Raley, Colton Gwaltney, Adalynn Gwaltney, Jacob Tuggle and Nate Tuggle. His sister Linda Long (Bobby) and nephews Bobby Long (Meaghen) and Brian Long (Amber). Along with his family he is survived by many friends.

Jimmy retired from SMECO in August 2004 after 37 years of Service.

He was a life member of both the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Solomon’s Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. At MVFD he served in many leadership positions including President. He received many awards for his service and commitment. Jimmy also served in several leadership positions at SVFRD including President. He received the first Jimmy Hill Volunteer of the year award in 1998, an award the he especially treasured. In 2003 he was inducted into the Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Hall of Fame. In 2005-2006, he served as President of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Association.

Jimmy also enjoyed NASCAR, taking cruises and being with his family.

The family will receive friends for Jimmy’s Life Celebration and visitation on June 23, 2017 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM with prayers recited at 7:00PM followed by Fireman’s prayers at 7:15PM in the Mechanicsville Fire Hall a Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 10:00AM in the Mechanicsville Fire Hall with Father Michael Tietjen officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Morganza, MD. A reception will follow at the MVFD Social Hall.

Pallbearers will be: Harold Anderson, Steve Montgomery, Timmy Mattingly, Bruce Fields, Jason Gwaltney, and James Fields.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jimmy Burroughs, Robbie Robertson,Johnny Pardoe, Billy Clay, Chris Franklin, Joe Ford, Henry Fowler, Willie Wilkerson and the MVFD and SVFDRS.
