Condolences

Condolence From: Paul Heymann
Condolence: Major (at that time, Captain) Spencer was the DISCOM (Division Support Command) Assistant S-1 (Personnel Officer) at Fort Riley KS (1st Infantry Division, aka the Big Red One). As a Private First Class, I had several jobs in the DISCOM: running the copy machine / distribution center, driving a jeep or 2-1/2 ton truck in the field, public affairs / photography (largely Hometown News Releases), and most importantly, making coffee for the officers during field training exercises. Despite my several mess-ups, such as being late to formation and wrecking a jeep, CPT Spencer encouraged me to apply to West Point. I did get into the U.S. Military Academy Prep School at Fort Monmouth NJ, a year-long program to boost academic scores and fitness levels. A couple months after I had arrived at Monmouth, CPT Spencer called to see how I was doing. I was quite surprised that he took the time and care to check in. Subsequently, I did make it to West Point although I did not complete the 4-year program (more mess-ups!). I then transferred to Penn State and joined ROTC. I was commissioned, and completed a combined total of 23 years active and reserve service. I never followed up with Malcolm to let him know that I did complete a military career, but he was a part of my decision to become an officer, serve, and care for the soldiers under my command.
