Obituary for Raymond Lee "Monk" Melvin Sr.

Raymond Lee Melvin, Sr. “Monk” 74 of Mechanicsville, MD formerly from Leonardtown, MD passed away on November 23, 2019 at his home. Born on January 24, 1945 in Baltimore, MD he was the son of the late Sylvia Buckmaster and John Lee Melvin. He survived by his loving wife Mary Ellen Melvin whom he married on December 18, 1971 in Trinity Episcopal Church of Newport. Raymond is survived by his children Lee Melvin “Claire” of Berkley, MA, Jason Melvin of Mechanicsville, MD, and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Albert Tracy, Jr. and Wesley Tracy.

Raymond was a graduate of Leonardtown High School and was a life-long resident of St. Mary’s County, MD. Raymond served in the United States Navy for 3 years, from April 18, 1963 to February 8, 1967. While serving in the Navy, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He then became a Safety Officer at Naval Air Station Patuxent River for 35 years, retiring on February 4, 2005.
He enjoyed making canes and taking walks in the woods.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home in Leonardtown, MD. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 9:30 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop McLean officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Corey Melvin, Johnny Hardesty, Ross Tuck, Denny Grube, Nabil Guffey, and John Hardesty.
