George Emerick “Popcorn” Fenwick, 75 of Lexington Park, MD passed away at Bridgepoint National Harbor, Washington, DC on May 23, 2020.

He was the second child of fourteen children, born on October 30, 1944 to the late George Henry and Margaret Madeline (Somerville) Fenwick.

George received his education from St. Peter Claver Catholic School and Cardinal Gibbons High School, graduating Class of 1964. After graduating from high school, George began his federal government career at Indian Head Division as a Propellant Handler in the Extrusion Plant. On October 5, 1966, he was drafted in United States Army to serve during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, he received a National Defense Service Medal with an honorable discharge, George returned to Indian Head Division on October 15, 1968 to continue his federal government career, as a Wood Worker Leader. During his career, he received numerous accolades and awards including, Outstanding Performances, Commander’s Award for Team Excellence, Employee of the Year, Special Act and On the Spot Awards, Safe Driving Award and Career Service Awards. After, over 40 years of dedicated service, George retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division, Indian Head, MD on March 31, 2006.

George was united in holy matrimony to the late Queenie Elizabeth Fenwick on September 15, 1979. They celebrated 35 years together, prior to her passing on November 11, 2014. From that union, they were blessed with four children.

He was a faithful servant and lifelong member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where he served as an Usher. He was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael’s Council No. 2065, Ridge, MD. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, always helping out in the community. George would visit the sick, homebound family members, friends and neighbors, encouraging them and lifting their spirits in the Lord; he was always willing to lend a helping hand, when needed.

He was the patriarch of the Fenwick Family and had a heart of gold. His caring and generous heart, sociable personality, won hearts, respect and touched the lives of many who knew him. George enjoyed hosting gatherings for family and friends, casino trips, shopping, listening to oldies and gospel music, watching sports “a true die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan”, attending family events and reunions, which would not end without a “words of wisdom” speech for the family.

George’s fatherly spirit will be missed by many family members but will never be forgotten.

George leaves to cherish his memories, three children; Marvin A. Fenwick and Karin M. Walcott (Lloyd) both of Lexington Park, MD, and James A. Smith of Grand Prairie, TX; Grandchildren, Deuan, Sr., Marque (Tsianina), Eboni, Jaleesa (Marcus), Demetrious, Dominique, Erica, Shanti, Shamear, Kevina and Tatiana. Great-Grandchildren, Deuan, Jr. “DJ”, Maliya, Makhia, Loyal, Jedidiah, Elijah, Aiyana, Kyrah, Alijah, Ashanti, Anasiah, Azariah, Arayla, Taylor, Antonio, Atlanta and Aubrey. Four brothers, Robert Fenwick (Dottie), Joseph Fenwick (Jackie), Philip Fenwick (Allison) and Charles Fenwick (Glenda); six sisters, Agnes “Celie” Fenwick, Arlene Carter (Robert), Brenda Butler (Darnell), Alma Elaine Somerville (Pernell), Phyllis Stevens, and Cathy Bush (Tommy); brothers-in-law, James Edward Carroll, Samuel McClane and Larry Brown; sister-in-law, Nola Carroll, one aunt/godmother Annie Carroll and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Godchildren, Barbara Lee Chase, Michael Fenwick, Sr., Yvonne Brooks, Steven Carter, twins, Keith and Kevin Lee and Joshua Williams. He will truly be missed by all, especially by his brother-in-law, who was like a brother, Robert “Catfish” Carter whom he shared a special bond with.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Queenie, son, Charles E. Carter, daughter-in-law, Ramona Smith; sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Carroll, Mary “Patsy” Miles and Mildred Fenwick; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Woods; brothers-in-law, William Carter, Horace McClane, William Stevens and James Miles; and nephews, Wayne Clinton, Sr. and godson, Joseph Clinton.

The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all your prayers, your words of encouragement, your love, and many acts of kindness extended to us during our time of sorrow. May God continue to bless each and every one of you!

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 5, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church St. Mary's City, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be for immediate family only. Interment will at St. James Catholic Cemetery Lexington Park, MD.
