Condolence: To the family of Richard Knott:
We first met Richard in June of 2017 when we began renting the Wharf House as a year-around escape from the city. We came there to meet with the owner, Gita van Heerden, and Richard was there with her. What might have been just a pleasant time getting acquainted and confirming our contract became a fascinating in-depth history lesson of the people and life at Sotterley and its environs, described by Richard. The extent of detail and breadth of knowledge of the area was amazing. He spun off dates and names as though the events were yesterday. He later gave us copies of the books he and his grandson, Shawn, have written and we will always treasure them.
Over the past three years, it has been always a highlight to have a visit with Richard when we are staying at the Wharf House, His birthday was the same as Seldon’s and for the past two years we brought him cakes to celebrate. He seemed to enjoy that. We will miss him very much. He was an extraordinary person and Seldon and I feel privileged to have known him.
Our heartfelt condolences,
Holly and Seldon Todd

Condolence: I'm very sorry that my friend Mr. Knott has passed on. It was always a pleasure working with him on history projects for St. Mary's County, ranging from topics such as Buck Briscoe to watermen on the Patuxent River to the history of Hollywood. He was a good man. God bless.

Condolence: My condolences to all of his family.
Richard had called me several times over the past few years asking about Jones Wharf and my father. I hope I was some help in his research, but I was most appreciative of his sharing of stories about my family that I didn't know.
His zeal for living an active and full life is an example for all of us.He will be missed by the whole community.
Sincere sympathy

Condolence From: Gita S. van Heerden
Condolence: Richard Knott was always a legend for me. His father ran Sotterley for my great grandfather starting in 1911, and Richard and my grandmother, Mabel Ingalls, had a very close connection. I learned so much about so many things from Richard in these past 20 years after I moved to the area. It's hard to imagine this mighty oak has fallen. He and my mother spoke every week from my grandmother's death in 1993 until Mom died last year. They both missed the old days.
It's been a terrible couple of years for your family and I grieve for all that you've suffered. Up until the end Richard was full of plans about the next book he was writing, but he was also serenely prepared if the Lord called him. He missed all those who had gone before. He led a good life. I will miss him greatly.
