Nicholas Joseph Simonetta
Nicholas “Nick” Joseph Simonetta, “PopPop”, 89, of LaPlata, MD, formerly of Colton’s Point, St. Mary’s County, MD, passed away on November 7, 2022 in Silver Spring, MD. Nick was born in Syracuse, NY on February 16, 1933 to his late parents, Mary Nancy Adornato Simonetta and Augustino Simonetta. Nicholas was the loving husband of Patricia Ann Simonetta, who were married in December 1992 and lovingly renewed on February 18, 2010 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Avenue, MD. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Jeanne Marie, Mary Theresa, Ronald, Christopher, and Christian, his siblings Marie of Syracuse, NY, and Fay of Syracuse, NY. Nick “PopPop” was the proud grandfather and great-grandfather to 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Nicolas was preceded in death by his siblings Elizabeth, Rosemary, Dominick, Joseph, and August.
Nicholas graduated from Syracuse High School. He was a business owner, restauranteur, and renowned innovator and trailblazer in the entertainment industry, retiring in 2009 after over 40 years in business. Nicholas served in the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class for four years, from January 23, 1952 to January 23, 1956. He was a proud member of the 7th District Optimist Club and American Legion. He enjoyed baseball, softball, and spending time with his wife and dog.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 21, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Avenue, MD. Internment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Bushwood, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Ross, Tom Emery, Dominic Troese, Greg Van Meter, Nicholas Simonetta, and Dominic Bright. Honorary pallbearers will be The Optimist Club Members.
