Obituary for John J. "Johnny" Thompson, Sr.

John Joseph (Johnny) Thompson, Sr, 84, of Avenue, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on November 22, 2022, with his family by his side. Born March 9, 1938 on the family farm in Avenue, he was the son of the late Thomas Bertrand Thompson, Sr. and Anne Louise Russell Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife Janet Hill Thompson, whom he married on August 31, 1963 at St. John’s Church in Clinton, MD, and his two children, John Joseph “Jay” Thompson, Jr, and his wife Sharon, and Diane Marie Thompson, and her friend Stan, both of Avenue. He was preceded in death by his Daughter, Debra Lynn Thompson (1965). He is survived by four grandchildren, John Joseph Thompson, III and his wife Jessica, Candace Nicole Thompson Nelson and her husband Andy, Natalie Marie Thompson and her friend Jason, and Leanne Grace Fenwick, and five great-grandchildren, Hunter Thompson, Cooper Thompson, Danielle Nelson, Grace Nelson, and Carson Guy.
Johnny is also survived by his siblings Thomas “Billy” Thompson of Mechanicsville, George Thompson of Hollywood and Harriet Cuel of Tracy, California. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Ann (Sr. Mary Martha) Thompson, of Georgetown, Theresa Mills, of Leonardtown, Dorothy Reichard, of Leonardtown, and Robert “Butch” Thompson, of Avenue, MD.

Johnny was first employed as a tile setter for Pierotti Tile Company for 11 years. He started his own tile setting business, Thompson & Guy Tile, in partnership with the late Joseph Matthew Guy in 1969. The partnership ended in 1986 and he continued as Thompson Tile Company until he retired in 2002. Johnny was a remarkable tile setter, well known by all the builders in Southern Maryland as “The Tile Man”, and his work is still talked about and admired today. In his early years he was a member of the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department, an Honorary Member of the 7th District Volunteer Rescue Squad and member the 7th District Optimist Club. Johnny loved his family most and his activities outside of work always revolved around family and friends. He spent his years camping, boating, fishing, hunting, farming, and making memories with his family. He loved to have the family together for holidays or any reason. He always cherished visits from his siblings and family gatherings with them. He was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was always kind and smiling and made everyone around him laugh and smile. Everyone who knew him loved him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown MD, where prayers will begin at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Holy Angels Church, Avenue, MD, with Father Stephen Wyble officiating. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Bobby Thompson, Bobby Raley, Johnny Thompson, III, and Andy Nelson.
