Obituary for Bessie Marie "Betty" Hill

Bessie (Betty) Marie Hill, 91, formally of Lexington Park, MD, passed away at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home on Nov. 24th due to complications from advanced dementia. Betty was born Jan. 31, 1931, in Hollywood, MD to the late James H. and Clara Mae (Wallace) Mattingly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Matthew Hill; sisters, Alberta M. Hare, Sister Elenora Mattingly, Eileen Baumer, Margaret (Peggy) Keller, Clara E. Mattingly; and brothers, Thomas M. Mattingly, Andrew L. Mattingly, James V. Mattingly, Joseph L. Mattingly, Chester S. Mattingly, James H. Mattingly Jr., George F. Mattingly, and Wallace A. Mattingly.

Betty is survived by her sons Charles E. (Debra) Gist, Thomas J. (Marie) Gist, and daughter Mary C. (Bob) Kulas, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

After high school Betty started her working career as a telephone operator, then at Litton Industries as a key punch operator and then a data entry processor with Data Wares, Inc., retiring in 1993.

Betty was a devote Catholic attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lexington Park, and St. John’s Catholic Church, Hollywood. Until her eyes started to fail, she was a master crocheter, making many pieces over the years that are still heavily sought. Betty loved bingo, playing cards and especially scratch-off lotto tickets.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 2, 2022 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. Where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM in the funeral home chapel with Deacon Juan Ortiz officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens Leonardtown, MD.
