Obituary for Luther Daniel "Lou" Pullen

Luther “Lou” Daniel Pullen, Commander, U.S. Navy, age 90, of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. He was born February 18, 1933 in Woodville, Virginia, son of the late Alice Atkins Pullen and Ennis Daniel Pullen.

Lou was the loving husband of Susan Yvonne Wood Pullen, whom he married at Immaculate Conception Church in Mechanicsville, Maryland on March 22, 1980. Together they enjoyed 43 wonderful years.

Lou proudly served in the United States Navy for 29 years in the aviation arena. While in service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Antarctica Service Medal. After retiring from the Navy as a Commander in 1982, he continued his career in the private sector for an additional 15 years, retiring from Lockheed Martin.

In his free time, Lou was an avid golfer. Hard working and compassionate, he also dedicated time to volunteer work, enjoying giving back to the community. He was a member of the Ocean Ridge Veterans Association and the Military Officers Association of America.

Most importantly, Lou loved and was loved by his family and friends near and far. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed deeply and remembered fondly by all.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Wood Pullen and his children: Terry Pullen (Cathy) of Poplar Branch, North Carolina, Kimberlee Pullen Spires of Suffolk, Virginia and Jeff Pullen (DeDe) of Mechanicsville, Maryland. Two grandchildren: Amanda Pullen-McGrath (Sean) and Danielle Tate (Matthew). Six great-grandchildren: Carter Pullen-McGrath, Amelia Tate, Finnegan Pullen-McGrath, Simon Tate, Oliver Pullen-McGrath, and Ambrose Tate.

Lou was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen Adams and Odell Adams, his brother and sister-in-law, Bryan Pullen and Barbara (Kite) Pullen and his son-in-law Elmer Spires.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, MD, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM with Father Michael Tietjen officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Helen, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Cataudella, Jim Downey, Eric Pullen, and Quintin Wood.
