Obituary for Joseph "Norman" Wathen

Joseph “Norman” Wathen, 73, of Mechanicsville, MD, formerly of Bushwood, MD, passed away on May 1, 2023 in Callaway, MD. Born on February 20, 1950 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late Bonnie Lee Wathen and the late Albert Leonard Wathen, Sr. Norman was the loving husband of Loretta Ann Wathen, whom he married on May 15, 1998 in Mechanicsville, MD. Norman is survived by his children Steven Wathen (Amanda) of Leonardtown, MD, Kevin Wathen (Jennifer) of Great Mills, MD, Howard Wathen (Laura) of Leonardtown, MD, Cindy Wathen of Oak Grove, KY, his siblings Paul B. Wathen of Valley Lee, MD, Mary E. Rencher of Clements, MD, Shirley M. Wood of California, MD, Robertha L. Hill of Hollywood, MD, Theresa A. Wood of Mechanicsville, MD, as well as seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Joseph Norman Wathen, Jr. and his siblings Robert W. Wathen, Albert L. Wathen, Jr., Ernest S. Wathen, and Annie B. Wathen.
Joseph was a lifelong St. Mary’s County, MD resident. Norman was a water well driller for Watson & Johnson in Callaway, MD and J.J. Payne & Son’s Compton, MD, for over 30 years, retiring on June 1, 2010.
Norman enjoyed watching westerns, WWE wrestling, Jeopardy, and NFL Football. He was a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. Norman also enjoyed drinking coffee and smoking Winston 100’s.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Father Ryan Pineda officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Trevor Wathen, Tyler Wathen, Brian Watson, Charles Wathen, Paul B. Wathen, Jr., and Charles Langley. Honorary pallbearers will be Raelyn S. Wathen, Daniel L. Wathen, and David Wathen.
