Obituary for William Henry Holt, Sr.

Mr. William Henry Holt Sr, (89) son of the late William Matthew Holt and Ethel Marie Brown Holt was born January 2, 1935, in Morganza, Maryland. He attended Saint Joseph’s Catholic school. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church.

William met the love of his life, the late Louise Young, at age 15. It was mutual love at first sight. They united in marriage on June 22, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Church. This union brought forth seven children.

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, he was educated at St. Joseph
Colored School. William was a hard worker and worked a variety of jobs. He worked on the railroad, built barns for gypsies, was a maintenance worker for the St. Joseph’s Church and Mother Catherine Spalding School. He left there to work construction for Jowett and later William F. Klingsmith.

William had a love for family and community. His days started and ended with prayer, praying for everyone. He was an inspirator, giving advice on life lessons. William was a jack of all trades always working on something. He enjoyed gardening, repairing vehicles, working on the house, dancing, playing cards, cooking, and watching westerns or Syfy shows. William was a member of two social clubs; The Horseshoe Club and the Try Me Club. People would come from all over for his potato salad.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving children: William Holt, Jr. (Diane), Lorena Nelson (Francis), Paul Holt (Jacqueline), Philip Holt, Bernadette Randolph (Cornell), Kelly Holt (Eunice), Karen Holt (Michael), 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Helene Holt, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

William peacefully departed this life at home, on January 25, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Ethel Holt, his wife Louise Holt, sisters Ethel Holt, Martha Lorena Holt, Martha Louise Chase, brothers Paul Lawrence Holt, Kelly Matthew Holt, Philip Irving Holt, and grandson Paul Herbert.

I MADE IT HOME SAFELY

I just wanted to let you know that I made it home safely. The journey wasn’t an easy one, but it didn’t take too long. Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh, so new. I wish that I could close your eyes so you could see it too. Please try not to be sad for me. Try to understand. God is taking care of me. I’m in the shelter of his hands. Here there is no sadness and no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying, and I will never hurt again. Here it is so peaceful, when all the angels sing. I really have to go now to try out my wings.
