Hornor Lee Courtney , 80, of St. Inigoes, MD died June 22, 2005 in St. Inigoes, MD. "Joe", as we so lovingly knew him, was born in Hattiesburg, MS on April 6, 1925 to the late Martha Courtney and the Late Baron McDougle. It's a mystery to most of us just exactly when Joe came to St. Mary's County, including his closest family and friends. It is unknown where he received his education; but, with or without education, it didn't stop him from making a decent and legal living for himself. Joe worked as a laborer for a Contractor in his early years on the State Road. He did many jobs to survive, one of which included dredging oysters. In the latter years of Joe's employment he worked for Ms. W. L. Unkle of Beachville, MD. He was a groundskeeper for Ms. Unkle for approximately 12 years. Joe was dependable and dedicated. Ms. Unkle knew if she needed Joe, all she had to do was call. He didn't have transportation, but he would find a way to get there. Joe had an active after-work life. He loved going to Melinda Barnes (Hillcrest Tavern) and Robinson Barnes. He also loved a good ball game. One thing he loved more than anything was "Playing Cards". Whether it was Spades or Tunk, you could count on Mr. Joe being there. He was not going to miss a card party. Mr. Joe or Uncle Joe, was preceded in death by his dear friend Estelle Chisley. Estelle was indeed the love of Mr. Joe's life. Prior to his death, many times he would speak of "Stelle". Joe leaves to mourn his daughter, Karen Lena Adeshina, of Lexington Park, MD; his sister Ola Mae Carter of St. Inigoes, MD; and, one of his dearest and closest friends, Tyrone Mason, of Lexington Park, MD. Mr. Joe could always depend on Tyrone for whatever he needed and Tyrone would always do his best to be there. Mr. Joe leaves a host of friends and relatives who will mourn his death, but will cherish many good memories. The family received friends on June 29, 2005 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. where a Funeral Service was held officiated by Elder John Briscoe. Interment followed in Charles Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers for Mr. Courtney were George Boykin, Lonnie Ford, John Butler, Rodney Clark, Ray Mason, Von Mason. Arrangements were provided by Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A.
