“What a special lady that God chose to bring home for His birthday party! Always had a smile for everyone. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially by the wonderful family she leaves behind. You will be in our prayers during this difficult time.”
“Darlene and family…Aunt Doris was like a 2nd mom to me when mom passed. Alot of the time she thought I was her daughter Darlene, she always got our voices mixed up. This made me feel like a member of the family. Aunt Doris should have been a crochet teacher, she was always making afghans, slippers, you name it, she would make it, and this hobby was passed on to Franny. Her other hobby was jigsaw puzzles, this was something I remember her and darlene sharing, one would put it together, take apart, and pass along to the other. Aunt Doris is now happy and back with her family and talking about everyone here. She was welcomed with open arms, but left us with sad hearts. She was very fun loving, and a special lady and aunt, and made everyone feel special. She never forget ones birthday. If you needed someone’s address, just call Aunt Doris. She was very active, and wanted to help everyone and never said no. I never forgot her phone #, because we had the same 4 #’s. Something we had in common. These are some of the fun things I will always remember about my Aunt Doris. My deepest sympathy and prayers are with you. Peace be with you all. AUNT DORIS, PLEASE TELL MOM AND DAD HELLO, GIVE THEM A HUG AND A KISS AND TELL THEM THAT I LOVE AND MISS THEM.”
“To Hammett Family, We are so saddened by the loss of our wonderful Aunt Doris. Our sympathy and love go out to all of our cousins and their families. There are so many special memories of Aunt Doris that I will always treasure. As young children, Aunt Doris opened her home and her heart to my brothers, sister and me. She cared for us, told jokes to make us laugh, fed and loved us like we were her own. We have always kept in touch by sending cards to each other and I will miss her deeply. Our prayers and thoughts are with the whole family. “
“To the entire Hammett family, We are so sorry for your loss. We are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.”

“A correction to my earlier message… Doris was the fourth of TEN children in the Wallace family.”
“My condolences to the Doris Hammett Family. Doris was a beautiful loving lady and she will be truly missed by everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.”
“My Aunt Doris has gone to heaven! She had her ticket, just in case, and was ready to go when “her time came”. It came on Christmas eve and she was ready to go by Christmas morning. Being the determined person she was, she waited for her seven children; Anthony, Robin, Franny, Darlene, Michael, Terry and George to make it to her side before she left this earth to be in heaven in time to celebrate her parents wedding anniversary and the birth of Jesus Christ, her savior. Aunt Doris was the fourth child of seven children born to Glen and Berlean Wallace. Her siblings; Freeman, Eleanor, Elwood, Dola, Frances, Jean, Richard and Nancy were all there waiting for her when she stood at the gates of heaven; with open arms and smiles on their faces. She left her last remaining sibling, a sister, Lorraine here with us to remind us still of the great legacy the Wallace family leaves in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Doris was “Aunt Doris” to 33 nieces and nephews given to her by her siblings – plus more given to her by her husband Louis’s family. I don’t know about the rest of my cousins, but she never forgot my birthday and always called me with a special greeting in her unmistakable and glamorous Katherine Hepburn-like voice. I will miss that so very much; it was my special time with my Aunt Doris that I thoroughly enjoyed. She was the best role model in every thing she did – I know, I watched her for 58 years and she never faltered. She was courageous and bold, but with gracious politeness. She was a tireless volunteer who worked with determination and firmness of purpose. She was a kind and gracious person who enjoyed a sociable chat. She was always willing to listen with unaffected politeness to anyone; extending a cordial welcome to everyone she met. She was a kick-in-the-pants, fun person to have a laugh with and to share the latest family news. The simplest pleasure became the biggest treats for her. Cooking up some crab cakes for John and I every time we’d visit, watching birds and butterflies from her front porch, assembling a new/used puzzle, it all made her happy and she was quick to share that sweet smile and infectious belly-laugh to show you just how tickled she was. She never wanted to bother or be an imposition to anyone. She truly was a woman of valor that I hope I can emulate through out the rest of my life. Aunt Doris, rest in peace, be happy that you are back with those who left before you on their journey to heaven and I will see you in my dreams. I love you, Pat”

“We were so sorry to hear of Aunt Doris leaving this earth. I don’t believe I ever met a kinder, gentler person. She always thought of others first. I had such a happy surprise when she called and sang happy birthday to me last October. She always made sure everything was neat and tidy, so I’ll believe that is what she is doing in heaven. Although time and distance separate us, she will always be with us in our hearts. Our prayers are with the family.”
“Our deepest sympathy to the Hammett family, all of Aunt Doris’s Children and their families. We remember Aunt Doris from when I was just a young guy. The time she came to visit Mom and Dad one summer was very special and she was a special lady who could bring a smile to your face at anytime. She was a very special Lady and will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Ron and Noreen Wallace, Harford, PA”
“My deepest sympathies to the Hammett family. Miss Doris was a ray of sunshine and every day I went to the governmental center I always made it a point to visit with Miss Doris. She was always in a great mood and made everyone feel welcome with her southern Maryland hospitality. I will always have fond memories of her and what she gave the community. May God bless Doris and all the Hammett family.”
“I just received word of Aunt Doris’ passing. She is one who will be missed so badly. She was a good, kind wonderful person. I know there is a celebration in heaven with her and all her siblings, parents and other family. I am selfish like many of us and will miss her here on earth. But the glory she must be seeing now cannot be wished away from her. I am her namesake and She will always be in my heart. “

“The Hammett Family “Anthony, Robin, Frannie, Darlene, Terry, Mike, & George” It is with deep sadness that I am writing you today. But our times of sadness are washed away with Joy that Doris is truly at peace and rests in the hands of GOD. As I look back on 50 plus years that we spent in a little area called Seventh District, Colton Point. We were way out there so many would speak, near Muddy Creek. How I have fond memories of all of us younger and older kids growing up together just a step away form each others houses. Remembering now how great it was the way we had it as kids next door. At the time we really didn’t think about what would the years to come bring, all we knew that life was fun in our little Colton Point Community. So many holidays together, playing on the ice of the creek, going fishing, hunting, swimming, numerous visits to St. Clements (Blackistone) Island, Virginia cliffs, up and down the river and its tributaries. I also have fond memories of going to the three main stores on our bikes, Frank Gass, Frank Lawrence, & Jim Balls. Oh that Breyers ice cream at Lawrence’s, was getting treats from Jr. Bailey and Walter bailey when they arrived at Gasses store. Going to Ball’s store when we ran out of options at the other two. Our houses were always open to all of us going back and forth, not just several families but we considered us to be one family. Our parents looking out for one another, sometimes chasing us down simply to swat out behinds for something we deserved. But in the end it got back to normal almost every time. Yes we sometimes were frustrated with our parents always telling us what’s best for us, now we all can say they were right. Miss Doris will forever be in our hearts and hopefully she and Louis will be bonded together again with those that they lost on earth. I won’t go on because at 50 plus years it can be a big book of memories. All our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Nick & Sheryl Gibson Maddox Manor Farm Chaptico Md. “
“Dear Family, I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom, She was a wonderful lady was there for our wedding almost 20 years ago, and was apart of our lives ever since. “Frannie and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you “
“My sincere sympathy go out to all the children and their families for their loss of a terrific lady, Aunt Doris. She was definitely one of a kind. I can see her now flying around the kitchen with her cleaning cloth wiping off all counter tops and appliances. We use to call her “Grandma Walton”. She would just laugh. I only thought my mother was the “little woman with a BIG heart” but I would have to say that Aunt Doris would fit that description as well. I can see all of them up in heaven laughing and playing cards. I will never forget our visits together and I will definitely treasure all the memories she gave me. She really sorely be missed but I bet she’s happier now! I will miss you Aunt Doris. Love Diane”
“Frannie, So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing, we are sorry we didn’t know sooner, but just read it in the paper, she and Eddie would plan our dinner every day by phone, haha! I loved working with her and she was such a GREAT lady, please accept our sincere condolences. Jodie says hi also.”
