“My Mother. (reading from service) My Mother told me that she knew at a very young age all she wanted from life was to be a good wife and mother. At 16 years of age she became of wife, and at 19 years of age she became a mother for the first time. So fortunate was I, to have her as a mother. My brother, Tommy, and I grew-up in a very unique and treasured environment. Our Mom didn’t raise us with materialistic things, we were raised with love. Mom was the happiest when we were all together, just visiting. Mom can now rest in peace, knowing that she well exceeded her goal of being a good wife and mother; she was also a true friend, aunt, sister-in-law, and Nana. My Mom opened her heart to everyone that she met… well, wait, not true if you were in the express lane with more than the allotted item count, and geez, don’t even think about writing a check! Or if you were in the left lane going less than 10 miles over the speed limit! Seriously, Mom’s house was the house that always had the hugs, sweet cereals, laughs, kool-aid, kisses, and the cookies – oh, the chocolate chip cookies! And I couldn’t even count how many of our friends adopted Mom as their own! Our lives were never the same after December 24, 2009. Mom fought a tough fight. She never complained, she never had self-pity; she was extremely brave, and fought with conviction and heart. She was a woman that many admired. On October 25, 1973 she brought me into this world, and on October 25, 2010, I watched her leave it. I find beauty in that, and lots of symbology. I believe that Mom was tired, and knowing that she wasn’t able to care for her family to her standards, she left on my birthday to assure me that she was comfortable and ready for me to care for the family from now on. Mom operated in a very simple way… you get what you give. And by the enormous amount of love, support, and care that we feel right now, it is confirmed that she gave lots of love, support, and care. I hope that we all can take those wonderful attributes of Rita’s and continue to live life with them, that way her legacy will go on forever. “

“Wayne & Family: What a Wonderful Woman! She graced the halls of ATC. Her smile was enough to change any rotten mood. She looked after us like we were her on children. Every Christmas she would make cookies for all of the controllers. We would look anxiously forward to her cookies! She bent over backwards to do more than was asked of her. She would stand up for us even if it wasn’t her place. She was a beautiful, wonderful, sweet woman! Any woman would be lucky to be half the woman she was! She was like our mother away from home! “I am filled with heartfelt Sympathies after reading this news. I met Rita on Base many years ago at the CST. We instantly bonded & a wonderful relationship grew both professionally & personally. She made the entire working environment more pleasant & was actually one of those people you just couldn’t wait to see & hear about the latest news. She’d always speak of the Family with much pride & you just knew that she was never lost, but very much in love with Life & the happiness that was nearly contageous while you’d be around her. I wish the Family those continued memories that you nodoubt have & just know that she is definitely among those supreme gentle Spirits that rest in Heaven.”
“I had hoped that Rita was going to beat this…I’d kept imagining messin’ with her again back at her desk and she would be giving me ‘WHAT FER” back at me. Rita was one of those very rare people that when you first meet her, you feel you’ve known her forever. She really took care of us…I could always hear her in somebody’s cube explaining how to process travel orders, vouchers, Micro Soft stuff, etc. I know that was her job but, she had always perform it in a fun but caring manner. Oh how wonderful you were Rita. I’m thinking of the pain her family and friends are going through….I feel the pain as well…but through the pain and tears Rita, I can see your amazing smiling face. I so glad I had the privilege to meet and work with you. I miss you so very much… Ed Schaeffer “

And the only comfort I can give is that she fought the battle with all she had like she did everything in her life, always strong and determined. “Wayne, Barbara and Tommy: I am so sorry for your loss! Ms. Rita was a wonderful wife, mother and Nana. When I transfered to NAS Patuxent River, I considered her my “mom” away from home. She was always a positive and a love filled person. When I was pregnant with my first child, I would stop in her office every morning and we would talk. She would tell me what a joy her kids/grandkids were and all the wonderful times I would have ahead. The morning I delivered, I walked into work to tell her about the doctor’s appointment the day before and started crying. She said “What is wrong?” I told her I was in pain. She said “Let me time your pains! You are in labor. Call the doctor and tell them you are on your way.” I will never forget what a great person she was to me and all the advice she has given me. She will be truely missed! With Love!”

I loved hearing you talk about planning for her 60th birthday party last year – from then on I always wished to meet her, a woman who inspired you to put so much effort forward just to make her smile! It’s been a blessing and for me, sets a standard – I hope I can be the kind of mom who inspires that kind of love and loyalty in my children.
