“Bobby, Elaine, Cheryl, Brenda, Pierre, Nicole, Kelsey, Christopher, Danielle, Judy and the entire Mattingly family. No one has to to tell you how special a person Jerry was. He was always kind, considerate, very thoughtful with NEVER an ill word about or toward anyone, and NEVER complained about anything. NEVER in over the 30 plus years that I knew him did I see him loose his temper or raise his voice about anything. Although, over the past 10 years I only saw Jerry a few times, I will always remember the many times in 1984 and 1985 that I would fly him back and forth to Accomack County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia where he was a manager of Pargas. This kept him from enduring that gruesome 5 hour drive. From those times on, he called me “The CAPTAIN” and I called him “CAPTAIN ACCOMACK KID”. One night flight on December 9, 1984, Bobby and little Tom went along for the ride. (Bobby’s last flight ever in a small plane!) Fog had set in at the Accomack County Airport and we couldn’t land. We had to return to St. Marys Airport. Jerry then had to make that 5 hour drive back. Most people would be stressed out and complain, but NOT Jerry. His comment was, “Oh well, I guess I’ll have to drive!” That was Jerry. NOTHING seemed to bother him ever. The world would be a better place if more people had Jerry’s demeanor. His smile and attitude towards life will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace my friend. You are now truely one of the “CAPTAINS” in GOD’S hands. When it is time for me to leave this Earth, I hope you will be there to greet me with your ear to ear smile and be my “CAPTAIN” and fly me away.”
“I am so sorry for your loss, Jerry was a wonderful person and will be missed greatly. My prayers are with the family.”

“As a boy my older brother Larry was always my hero especially in athletic pursuits.I remember as a kid going to watch Larry and Jerry’s baseball games and watching Jerry play catcher on their teams thru the years and how much I admired him also. Even though I was the annoying younger brother he always treated me with good natured humor and kindness that he always seemd to extend to everyone. Growing older and having the honor of drinking a beer with him or playing a game of pitch at a family outing he always made me laugh and appreciate his zest for life. I think we go thru life not truly appreciating the impact little actions we take or words we say have on others around us. What greater testimonial than to say whenever I think of Jerry a smile immediately comes to my face. Sorry I cannot be at the services but please know my prayers will be with everyone in the family. “

“Jerry was a remarkable, extraordinary person. I truly loved him. When my father passed away, Jerry came to Daddy’s prayers and through his tears, he told me “I am sorry I missed Nanny’s prayers, but I would never miss Bill’s. He was a great man!” And he held me tight and we cried. If Daddy were still here, he, too, would hold me tight and through his tears he would tell me “Jerry was a great man!” I know that above all else, Jerry cherished his family. May God bless and comfort each and every one of you. I send my heartfelt love to you all.”

“We will all miss Jerry. I will never forget when he nominated me to become President of the Sunday Youth Basketball League , the Catholic Middle School basketball league in Southern Maryland. Little did he or I know at the time how much that would mean to me or how many lives I was able to touch because of this one single gesture of his. He had a way to inspire people to do things they didn’t know they wanted to do or were capable of doing. He touched more lives by that simple quality than he ever knew or realized. So humble. A great person and I was lucky to be part of his life.”
“Cheryl, Brenda and family – Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sadness.”
“Our thoughts are with you, he was a great guy.”
“Nicole, Kelsey, Bobby, Elaine and family, I’m so sorry to hear about Jerry. He was one of a kind. Always with that beautiful smile and loving ways. He always put everyone else first and took care of anyone that needed anything. I remember he babysat my oldest daughter when she was an infant so that Jamie and I could spend some time alone together. How many boys would you find that would do that? He even gave Patti a birthday card with raffle tickets in it and wrote a note in there saying he hoped she would win. What an exceptional boy! Jerry and Cheryl were God Parents to my youngest daughter. As a man, Jerry was still just like that, giving to everyone. I will miss him, even though I didn’t get to see him that often. The Lord takes the good ones and leaves behind those who are not worthy of his kingdom. I love you Jerry and you always made me feel like I was part of the family. Rest in peace because you truly deserve it. God Bless all of the family.”
“Judy, I would like to thank you for bringing Jerry into our lives. We also loved Jerry and are so blessed to have spent his last week with him during his and your vacation. We have lots of memories and my heart breaks for all of the family and because of you we came to know Nicole and Kelsey and see how much they meant to their dad. I really wished I had got to meet the rest of the family before this tragedy, They are all great people. Just know I will always be here for you. May God give all of you the strength you need during this trying time.”
“I am so sorry for your loss. Jerry initially installed the gas system when my home was built 11 years ago and over the years helped numerous times whenever there was a question or issue regarding the gas system. Every time, Jerry went out of his way to help, but more importantly, treated me so very kindly. I will always be grateful for that kindness. You now have him as an angel in heaven, just as he was an angel here on earth. May Our Lord help you through this difficult time. “
