Ira John “Johnny” Coombs, Jr., 67, of California, MD passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 2, 2014 at his residence. Born on June 30, 1947 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the loving son of the late Frances Marie Cameron Coombs, and Ira John Coombs, Sr. Johnny was the loving husband of Ruth Ann (Joy) Coombs, whom he married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Morganza, MD. Johnny is survived by his daughter: Kim Ann Bistline of Leonardtown, MD, and Anna Joy Bussler (Frankie) of Mechanicsville, MD, Grandchildren: Emma Elise Bussler, Carson Lee Bistline, and Dalton Nash Bussler. Siblings: Rex Coombs (Kathy), Dee Coombs (Nita) both of Leonardtown, MD. He was preceded in death by his brother Dan Elliott Coombs.
Johnny graduated from high school in 1965, he was certified as a Machinist in 1968; he served 5 years with the Maryland Nation Guard from 1966 to 1971. He worked as an Engineering Technician for the Department of Navy at Patuxent River, MD, from March, 1964 for 30 years,. Johnny was a man of many qualities and could solve any problem with his common sense abilities and the experience and knowledge he had so meticulously filed for quick retrieval. He loved his antique cars, owning many different years and models over time, all manufactured by Ford. He was an avid Ford man and expressed that boastfully during NASCAR races. He was proud of his 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL and kept it groomed, spotless and original for a long time until his illness prevented him from making it perfect for the car shows. He enjoyed going to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to vend several times a year and looked forward to those times. Johnny spent many hours relaxing on the Patuxent River with his crab net and trotline. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he so often bragged of their talents to anyone who would listen. He deemed his lot in life to teach all his family and friends to do things his way. And it usually worked.

“Ruth,AJ and Kim I was so shocked when I came home and looked at obituary column and seen Johnny’s name. I had not seen him in a few months and did not know he was that ill especially after all he went through with his heart. He helped me out alot when I first was having my issues with my heart. I have known him and his dad way back when I worked at Fenwick Ford {what a die hard Ford fan}. Ruth, he was a wonderful person to be friends with and I am sure going to miss him and our conversations. Anything I can do for you just ask. R.I.P. old buddy. “
“Ruth I am sorry to hear of Johnny’s passing. I too went through this last year with the passing of my husband. The memories you will cherish and hold close to your heart. “Ruth, I am so sorry about Johnny’s passing. I am so glad that I was able to see you a few weeks ago. I enjoyed talking with both of you. Especially glad I saw Johnny since I hadn’t seen you guys in so long. Johnny was always a pleasure to talk with. Maybe that is because both of us like FORDs. You are in my thoughts and prayers.”
“Dear Rex and Dee (and families)–my heartfelt sympathies. Please know your ‘old’ friends are thinking of you and keeping you close in prayer.”
“Ruth: Spending time with you on Saturday was great. Somehow our families always manage to be together during the important times whether sad or happy. I think it goes back to our parents knowing each other before we were even born and after all these years (at least 71) we are still so close. You know I will be there on Tuesday and Wednesday and any time we can make it happen. You are so accepting of the inevitable and such a comfort to those that need you. Johnny exerienced more pain than all of us and is now in a more peaceful place.”
“I am really gonnna miss watching NASCAR with my Grandfather. Also talking on the phone with him about anything “hello” was what he answered with every time no hey no hi just “hello”. Johnny was very good at figuring out how to do things when they needed to get done and he knew how to successfully use about every tool known to man and he owned just about every tool too for those of you who knew about his stuff.Last summer working with him I could almost run circles around him when we were doing our work he would say “Carson if you ever get to be as old as I am you might understand” and that would make me laugh. As the obituary says he was a NASCAR fan and liked the big Ford teams, my favorite driver is Jeff Gordon so he would always yell “run him in the wall”. He did not like any Chevrolet driver. I loved to watch the races with him though. I miss Poppop “
“Ruth and family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please let us know, if we can help you. Deepest Sympathy.”
“Ruth, AJ & Family – You are in my thoughts and prayers. I have great memories of Johnny and him always complaining if we weren’t driving the Ford Ambulance to pick him up. May his sweet soul always be with you! “

“Ruth, Kim, A.J., Losing a Husband and Dad and long time Friend is always tough. Reflecting on his life with such serious illness and restrictions makes us all sad at his passing. If you focus on the support, joy, fun and all the love all of you helped him have over those years it might make it a little easier and you can be proud of the family and folks you have been for Ira….you all fought the good fight right along with him. He told me so.”
“Johnny will sure be missed at all the family functions our deepest sympathy”
“Ruth, Kim, AJ, and all of Johnny’s family: Our hearts are heavy knowing the pain and sorrow you are all going through. It is so hard to lose someone you love but also hard to watch them suffer. “Our grandfather was a funny awesome man and loved Ford and NASCAR. he would always brag about us and Carson on our talents. He did not like when I (Emma) wore flip-flops as he called shower shoes because he was afraid i was going to get hurt with them on being a caring grandfather! He was happy to take my first drive in my ooorange ( as he called it) mustang he called the little ford. He was happy that i got my permit to drive. I (Dalton) loved watching races with Poppop. My favorite is Jimmie Johnson #48 and Poppop always want fords or his favorite driver to wreak him. We will never forget the story of when he was driving and a person was walking down the street on thier phone and that person tripped over a turtle. We will miss u soooo much! See u later aligator! as he said when we woud leave. Enjoy the car show and crabs in heaven. XOXO <3 Love Ya!! "
