July 6, 1936 ~ October 30, 2014

God called Florence Ceilia (Moreland) McEwen home on October 30, 2014 in Fort Washington, MD. Born on July 6, 1936 in Mechanicsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Agnes and Fred Moreland. She was the eighth child of their eleven children. And last living child of Fred and Agnes Moreland. She leaves to cherish her memory, her two devoted daughters, Doria McEwen-Riddick and Beverly Renee McEwen, her son in law, Bobby and two granddaughters, Renita and Rana. Also her two brother in laws; Wilmer Jones and Maurice Curtis and her sister in law Veronica Moreland and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her five brothers; Frederick, James, Joseph, John, and Lawrence and also five sisters; Agnes Bustler, Elizabeth Jones, Audrey Foster, Madeline Reavis and Jane Curtis. Florence was educated in the St. Mary’s public school system and she graduated from Benjamin Banneker High School. In 1954, she married the late Silas McEwen, who was a Sailor stationed at Patuxent Naval Base. Out of the marriage union, two children were born; Doria and Renee. As a Naval wife, she got a chance to do a lot of traveling and one her most memorable trips was when she and her husband, along with her father drove across the county from Mechanicsville, MD , to San Diego, CA. She lived in Joliet, Illinois, San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA, where she later divorced and raised her two daughters. She made sure that they attended Catholic School from 1st to 12th grade. She was very proud of her daughters when they both graduated and received their Bachelor Degrees from Hampton Institute. In the late 1980’s she moved from Virginia to New York and worked in catering. Florence truly enjoyed preparing and learning how to cook various foods and trying out new recipes. In 1995, her daughter (Doria) and son in law (Bobby) asked her to come down to Maryland to live with them in their new home with a mother in law suite built especially for her, to help look after their children. She has two granddaughters (Renita and Rana) who affectionately called her “Lovee”. She was raised, baptized and married in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and in later years she resided with her daughter, where she attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Like her mother, she attended 7:00 mass. Florence was so proud to travel to Nashville, TN to see her oldest granddaughter, graduate from Vanderbilt University in May, 2011. And she as also very proud to visit and travel to Greensboro, NC to see her baby granddaughter, graduate from North Carolina State A&T University in May, 2014. Although, her health was failing, her prayer was that God let her see both of her granddaughters graduate and” To God the Glory”, she was able to do so with much pride and joy. Florence enjoyed shopping, cooking, traveling, and also eating out at restaurants with her daughter, Doria and Renee. Their shopping sprees would start by leaving out early in the morning, stopping for breakfast and not returning home until late in the evenings. They would eat at the new restaurant and shop at the malls and the various outlets’ and it would end up being an all-day affair! Florence made holidays special by preparing not only very delicious and tasty meals, but it was also very important that they looked appetizing as well. Christmas s was her most favorite holiday of all. Her traditions of cooking up a big feast, decorating the tree and playing Christmas Carols will always be remembered. Florence truly enjoyed being with her family and doing things with her two daughters, son in law and granddaughters because they “all” meant the world to her. Although, she had a heart of gold, and for those who knew her well, also knew if you got on her bad side that shoe could be quite feisty. All in all, she could be best described as lamb and lion bother rolled into one. She was truly a very strong woman who was “feisty” and a fighter to the end. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Mechanicsville, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 Am in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery Helen, MD.
