Charles Lewis Thompson, Sr., 66, of Hollywood, MD passed away at his residence on January 3, 2016. Born on May 3, 1949 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of the late Lelia Thompson and Morgan “Tex” Thompson. Charles was the loving husband of Gail Marie Thompson whom he married on February 14, 2000 in Leonardtown, MD. Charles is survived by his children: Cindy Nelson (Jay) of California, MD, Jennifer Schwartz of Valrico, FL, Chucky Thompson (Renee) of Mechanicsville, MD, Josh Maggio (Lisa) of Leonardtown, MD. Grandchildren: Chelsea Haizlip, Melanie Thompson, Oliva Schwartz, Carlie Thompson, Grace Maggio and Lawsen Maggio, great grandchildren: Layla Tennyson and baby to be Tennyson. Siblings: Pat Graves of Hollywood, MD, Joyce Foley of Leonardtown, MD, Wayne Thompson of Mechanicsville, MD, Tommy Thompson of Hollywood, MD, Bobby Thompson of Hollywood, MD, Lynn Brady of Hollywood, MD, Susan Bean of Callaway, MD, Ray Thompson of Hollywood, MD, and Ronnie Thompson of Bushwood, MD. He was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Katie Haizlip and Mason Maggio. Charles was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, MD, and worked as a Mechanic. He was also a Disc Jockey, Musician, and was a member of the Charles Thompson & Bottom County Bluegrass Band, where he was the singer and played the guitar. He performed, and contributed his time to many charitable organizations such as Hospice of St. Mary’s. Charles was a member of the Moose Lodge of Hollywood, MD and he loved classic Chevy cars, music and loved his family. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM with Deacon Ammon Ripple officiating in the Hollywood Vol. Fire Department Social Hall Hollywood, MD. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 10:00 AM with Father Ray Schmidt officiating in the Hollywood Vol. Fire Department Social Hall. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens Leonardtown, MD. Pallbearers will be: Wayne Thompson, Bobby Thompson, Ronnie Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Ray Thompson, Johnny Armsworthy, and Johnny Adams. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Chucky Thompson, Josh Maggio, Mike Graves, Chris Graves, Timmy Thompson, Robbie Thompson, Billy Thompson, DJ Brady, Ricky Brady, RJ Bean, and Andrew Thompson. Contributions may be made to Hollywood Vol. Fire Department P.O. Box 7 Hollywood, MD 20636, Hospice of St. Mary’s P.O. Box 625 Leonardtown, MD, and Children’s National Medical Center 111 Michigan Ave, NW Washington, DC 20010.

  5. Gail, Cindy/Jay, Chuckie/Renee, Jennifer, Josh/Lisa, It still seems so unreal. Charlie was a like another brother to me. Living beside him growing up and then him DJing for me when I had Dew Drop as well as my mechanic. A lot of stories, good times, and conversation.   41. Memories of Charles and Pat from days we spent together at St. John’s School and Church run through my mind as I write this sad and sincere note to the family.
    What a loss to the Sandy Bottom gangs of young people that we all were when times were much simpler and all of our parents were the spirit of our small community.
    My heart is still there with you all and my sincere feelings of loss are shared by many who were touched by Charles, his wonderful smile and his God given gift of music that lifted many when they may have needed it most.

It didn’t matter that the house was small or the dinner table was full of kids….there was always a chair and a plate for me. I have so many wonderful memories of those years long ago and Charles was a major part of those memories. I will never forget you and am so thankful to have been considered part of your family.

Charlie or daddy as I sometimes called him was one of the coolest people I ever knew, no matter what song or artist I was thinking of but didn’t know the correct title to, all I had to do was just give him a line or 2 from the song and just like that he knew it and sometimes the back round about the song, he amazed me he knew his stuff.     I only just found out Friday that Charlie had passed when I saw it in the newspaper. Please accept my most profound condolences. I had known Charlie for 30 years or more and I have played many a gig with him and jammed with him countless times. He will be greatly missed in the St. Mary’s bluegrass community.
