Mary Lillian Bailey

Mary Lillian Bailey, known to friends and family as “Mary Lillian” or “Aunt Sis,” passed away on January 18, 2018 in Leonardtown, Maryland at the age of 96 years. Mary was born on February 28, 1921 at the family home place on White’s Neck Creek in Bushwood, Maryland. She was the daughter of John William Hall, Sr. and Gladys Mae Cheseldine Hall. She married Thomas A. (Teen) Bailey on June 21, 1942 at St. Joseph’s Church in Morganza, MD.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Winnifred Lee Merson of Clements, and Thomas Christopher Bailey (Kathy) of Bushwood; grandchildren Michelle Bekel (Troy), Todd Merson (Jennifer), Ryan Bailey (Jordan), Alison Bailey and Sydney Bailey; and great-grandchildren Anna Merson and Abby Merson.
Mary was sister to Lucy J. Ramos and George L. Hall, Sr., both of Bushwood. She was predeceased by her parents; husband; and siblings John W. Hall, Jr.; Elizabeth Cleo (Betty) Twilly; Charles H. Hall; Thomas A. Hall, Sr.; and Dorothy M. Rusaw.
A native of St. Mary’s County, Mary attended Holy Angels School in Avenue and graduated from Margaret Brent High School. After graduation she went to work in Washington, D.C. for the C&P Telephone Company. She later worked in the St. Mary’s County Tax Assessments office in Leonardtown for eight years. In 1966 she went to work for St. Mary’s County Public Schools as a paraeducator. This was a job she truly enjoyed as she loved working with children. She made many life-long friendships at SMCPS and she retired in 1980. Mary loved spending time with family and friends - especially her grandchildren. She experienced life to the fullest with hobbies and special interests such as cooking, crafting and volunteering her time to help others. She was known for her fashion sense and “green thumb” for gardening.
Visitation was held on Monday, January 22, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with prayers at 7:00 p.m. at the Mattingly Gardiner Funeral Home, in Leonardtown. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Church in Avenue, with Rev. Anthony Lickteig officiating. Interment followed at St. Joseph’s Church, Morganza, Md.
Pallbearers: Charles Hall, Jr., Joe Ramos, Jr.; J.W. Hall; George Hall, Jr; Tommy Hall, Bradley Hayden, and Troy Bekel.
Memorial donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad, Avenue, MD.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. She was a wonderful friend to my mother Mary Burroughs. They would go to Emily’s beauty shop and after go to Bert’s for lunch and the to Hooks and Hangers (which they called shopping at Maceys). She always looked forward to spending Friday’s with your mom.
There are many fond memories of Mary. I remember visiting her home, her yard sales, shopping in Spotsylvania, church dinners. Also loved to hear her say, “Isn’t that grand!” She and Mama were good pals and Mama certainly loved her.
Mary, we will miss you and God Bless.
RIP Ms. Mary.. Mary was a sweet lady who always said “Hello Jennifer darlin” every time she saw me and gave me a hug.. I will miss that… Her and my grandmother Mabel were great friends who are now back together again. My prayers and condolences to all her family and friends. God Bless you Ms. Mary..

Aunt Mary was one of the most kind and loving people you would ever have the honor of knowing. She was always full of smiles and laughter and made you feel right at home and like you were her best friend. Family was very important to her and I know that she always wanted to share about hers but made time to inquire about yours. Her beautiful soul will remain in our hearts as a treasured gift always. Till we meet again, rest in peace!
To Mary’s family. I am heart broken to hear of Mary’s passing. She was never ever without a smile or a friendly greeting. She was SO full of life. She and my Mom had such good times when they worked at Dynard together…oh some of the tails they could tell!! You are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time…May God give Mary her reward in heaven.

My deepest sympathies on your loss. It is evident from the outpouring of support that Miss Mary indeed was a special person to many and she will be sorely missed. Please take comfort in these scriptural thoughts, God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) and he gives strength to those lacking it (Isaiah 40:28,29). He has also promised that one day suffering, pain and death will be no more and righteous people, including ones who have died, will live again on the earth forever ( Rev 21:4; Psalm 37:29). Until then, please lean on God and family and friends for support dduring this difficult time.

Our sincerest sympathy to all the family. Be assured of our love, thoughts and prayers. She and her husband were our first landlords many years ago. We rented their trailer for one year and we really appreciated them. May God bless them both always.
