April 28, 1949 ~ April 17, 2020

Janet Evans Standish, 70 of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on Friday April 17. Born on April 28, 1949 in Leonardtown, MD, she was the daughter of George Aloysuis Evans and Bertha Estelle Adams. Janet is survived by her husband Earnest Standish Jr. and her son David and was preceded in death by her son Steven. Janet lived her entire life in St. Mary County growing up on a farm with her brothers Charles and Johnny and her sister Jean. In 1969, she married Ernie and earlier this year, they celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Janet was passionate about caring for children. She spent 20 years as a home daycare provider where she nurtured countless babies and toddlers. As a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 2632 in California, MD, she was a Past President and Secretary and often organized children’s parties for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. In 1997, Janet began working as a contractor at Naval Air Station Patuxent River. She retired last September after supporting the F/18 Program as an administrative assistant for 22 years. She loved being in the work force and supporting the mission of the Navy by helping the pilots and engineers. In her spare time, Janet enjoyed gardening and crafting. She helped organize reunions for Chopticon High School’s second graduating class, the Class of 1967. She earned the name “Hacker Mom” when she wrote her own HTML to create a website for the class. As a tradition, she made a mean Southern Maryland stuffed ham that family and friends looked forward too every year as well as homemade buckeye candies at Christmas. During the summer, she enjoyed picking steamed crabs with family and friends. Her family wants to express their deepest thanks to the nurses and doctors at MedStar St. Mary's and Southern Maryland Hospitals who tried to save her life after contracting both COVID-19 and the Flu at the same time. Your bravery and sacrifice are inspiring. All funeral services will be private at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to either Susan G. Komen in the fight to end breast cancer (komen.org) or sending a check to Helpful Hooves Equine Therapy, 38520 Ah Ha Lane, Avenue, MD 20609. Helpful Hooves is 501(c)(3) dedicated to people with disabilities.

  3. Ernie and David, I’m so very sorry, it’s so hard to find the right words. Janet was such a sweet and loving person. I have so many wonderful memories, as she was becoming a teenager when I first came into the family. We had so many fun times together. And I will always treasure these later years working with her at PaxRiver, tho we were in separate Buildings, it was always great to pick up the phone and hear her voice on the other end. I’m really going to miss her and will be always praying for you. She is in a very Special place now with Steven, and now you have 2 special angels watching over you! Love you both very much! Aunt Vi

  4. David and Ernie – my heart goes out to both of you. Janet was such a kind hearted, sweet person, and I will cherish our friendship forever. The last time I saw her was during Christmas when we met at Lowes. She was looking for lightbulbs for her tree, and I was looking at the decorations. We chatted so long that we were asked if we could be helped three times! Each time we would answer, “No we are fine.” 🙂 But that’s how Janet was, always friendly and kind. But my best memory will be helping with her and Ernie’s 50th Anniversary party. She was SO happy that day! The smile on her face radiated the entire house. She told me everything was perfect and just what she wanted. Rest in Peace sweet Janet, your job on earth is complete. Now you can watch over your David and Ernie, with Steve by your side.

  5. Dave,

    Debbie Norris and Freddy Long

  7. Ernie and David, thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Janet was a dear friend and I enjoyed going out to dinner with Carol Sifford. She was the secretary at the VFW when I was President and she encouraged me and helped me so much. She was a lady of many talents and a true friend!

  8. Ernie and David My sadness for your loss cannot be expressed fully. I met your wife/mom on Cancer chat many years ago and have been trying to reconnect with her for a long time. I am so sorry she has passed. I have wonderful memories of her visit to CT with the other chat
room ladies and spouses and our trip to Winterthur. I have thought about her so many times over the years. I know she will be missed as I know she was loved.
