John Richard Knott, Sr.
March 9, 1925 ~ June 19, 2020
John Richard Knott, Sr., 95, of Hollywood, MD passed away on June 19, 2020 at his home in Hollywood, MD He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Pilkerton Knott, who passed on June 20, 2010. They were Happily married for 65 years. Richard was also preceded in death by his siblings; brothers Herbert Knott, Edward Knott, sister Margaret Knott. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Linda Ching Swarey and sons Charles William “Bill” Knott (Donna) and Leonard Knott (Margaret). He is survived by his children Johnny Knott (Donna), Darlene Ridgell Knott, Terry Knott (Donna) and grandson Shawn Knott (Susan). He had 17 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren. As well as daughter in laws Margaret Knott and Donna Knott.
Richard was born to parents Charles W. Knott, Sr. and India Knott on March 9, 1925 in the “Knott House”. Which was built for his parents, located on historic Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, MD. His father worked 50 years as a farm manager at Sotterley. Richard himself and his brother Edward both worked at Sotterley for many years. In total, the Knott family worked for the owners of Sotterley for over 100 years. Richard grew up on Sotterley learning to hunt, farm and tending the animals. Later at the age of 18, he bought a farm on Forest Landing Road in Hollywood, MD, with his brother Herbert Knott. Soon after, he began buying and selling oysters from the Patuxent River and was a captain of an oyster buy boat for 25 years. Richard had fond memories of the time spent working on the water and loved sharing stories of the people he encountered along the way. He also was a very successful real estate agent and also raised tobacco, soy beans, corn and black angus cattle.
Later in life, Richard pursued an interest of local history. He, along with his grandson, Shawn, wrote Memories of Sotterley, The Good Old Days on the Patuxent and a book about local county legend, Buck Briscoe. Richard was very proud of them and was always eager to share his personal stories and make the stories come alive.
Richards’ nickname was “Sharpie” and to his grandchildren he was known as “Poppy”. He possessed an uncanny ability to recall facts and events; his memory was truly “sharp as a tack” until the end. He took great pleasure in retelling stories of yesterday and also making sure that you had the facts right on stories that you told. He had a sense of humor, paired with rugged, yet charming curiosity. He was definitely “old school” and had no problem telling it like it is. You always knew where you stood with him. He was truly a one-of-a-kind man. Although, he had the stern and heavy handedness needed of an ole’ waterman, he also possessed an abundance of empathy and kindness when you least expected it. He loved caring for his farm, watching his cows and the baby calves grow strong. He also took great joy in seeing his grandchildren grow up over the years. He often bid you a fond farewell by saying “God Bless You”. God Bless You Poppy. Rest in Peace.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. It was my honor to have had the opportunity to come to know and love my dear friend Richard Knott. He was a remarkable man, and one whose life shaped Sotterley through the years in so many ways. Richard’s passing is truly the end of an era. We are so fortunate that he left us with some oral histories, as well as the many books he wrote which captured some of Sotterley’s past as well as the history of Southern Maryland. On behalf of many of us in his Sotterley Family, know how much we will miss our beloved friend and treasured Sotterley Descendant. My heart and my prayers go out to all of the Knott family during this sad time.
To all of the Knott family, Hollywood has lost a fine gentleman. His love for his home and county is only surpassed by the love for his family. Anytime we were able to sit and talk with him it was split with those two things, family & home. His pride writing with Shawn would show by his smile. God will Bless Him. He’s in good company with Mrs. Knott and his boys. God Bless you all

Richard was an honorable man and a good friend. Many times we would talk at length about cattle farming and market prices. Richard loved talking about Sotterley with its vast history
that will remain alive through his books. He was so knowledgeable about oystering and told us many stories about the watermen. He was very devoted to his family and community. My wife and I will miss him greatly and we give our love, prayers and condolences to the family.
I am truly sorry to hear of the loss of this wonderful and special man–Richard was very close to my Dad John Hanson and I, too loved sharing stories about our connections to Sotterley. He will be remembered with a great legacy thanks to his many books and family and friends of which he had so many.
To the Knott Family, please accept my sincere condolences. Poppy was so many different things to so many people. He was a wealth of knowledge about everything southern Maryland and was so proud of his heritage and where he came from. I will miss his stories and his wisdom. He will be sorely missed by us all.
May god bless the new angle that will watch over his family in the days ahead. Our thoughts and prays to all the family
Richard Knott was always a legend for me. His father ran Sotterley for my great grandfather starting in 1911, and Richard and my grandmother, Mabel Ingalls, had a very close connection. I learned so much about so many things from Richard in these past 20 years after I moved to the area. It’s hard to imagine this mighty oak has fallen. He and my mother spoke every week from my grandmother’s death in 1993 until Mom died last year. They both missed the old days.
It’s been a terrible couple of years for your family and I grieve for all that you’ve suffered. Up until the end Richard was full of plans about the next book he was writing, but he was also serenely prepared if the Lord called him. He missed all those who had gone before. He led a good life. I will miss him greatly.
Please accept my condolences for the loss of your father.
To the entire Knott family;
My deepest condolences on the passing of such a great man. He never met a stranger because all were friends in need of a personal history lesson… He truly was a fount of St Marys history and especially Hollywood/Sotterley historical knowledge… It was so common to look at my watch and see that hours had passed…He loved his family , his roots and his county… May he rest in peace and May God Bless All
Terry, Donna and family. So sorry for your loss. Sending oodles of prayers in your time of grief & healing. Love to all…
My condolences to all of his family.
Richard had called me several times over the past few years asking about Jones Wharf and my father. I hope I was some help in his research, but I was most appreciative of his sharing of stories about my family that I didn’t know.
His zeal for living an active and full life is an example for all of us.He will be missed by the whole community.
Sincere sympathy
I’m very sorry that my friend Mr. Knott has passed on. It was always a pleasure working with him on history projects for St. Mary’s County, ranging from topics such as Buck Briscoe to watermen on the Patuxent River to the history of Hollywood. He was a good man. God bless.
Johnny, Darlene, Terry, Shawn, my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to you and all who loved Mr. Knott. He was quite a guy.
To the family of Richard Knott:
We first met Richard in June of 2017 when we began renting the Wharf House as a year-around escape from the city. We came there to meet with the owner, Gita van Heerden, and Richard was there with her. What might have been just a pleasant time getting acquainted and confirming our contract became a fascinating in-depth history lesson of the people and life at Sotterley and its environs, described by Richard. The extent of detail and breadth of knowledge of the area was amazing. He spun off dates and names as though the events were yesterday. He later gave us copies of the books he and his grandson, Shawn, have written and we will always treasure them.
Over the past three years, it has been always a highlight to have a visit with Richard when we are staying at the Wharf House, His birthday was the same as Seldon’s and for the past two years we brought him cakes to celebrate. He seemed to enjoy that. We will miss him very much. He was an extraordinary person and Seldon and I feel privileged to have known him.
Our heartfelt condolences,
Holly and Seldon Todd
So sorry for your loss. I will always treasure the memories he shared of my dad, Owen Grover, and uncle, Alvin Grover. They did love the Patuxent River. May you rest in God’s peace.
Terry and family: my condolences to you all on the passing of your father. May he rest peacefully.
