Douglas Dean Mullens
November 23, 1964 ~ October 1, 2023
Douglas Dean Mullens Jr., “Dean” 58, of La Plata, MD, passed away October 1, 2023 in Hughesville, MD. Dean was born on November 23, 1964 in Washington, D.C. to Douglas Dean Mullens Sr., and the late Diane Mullens (Bryant). In addition to his father, Dean is survived by his stepmother Nancy, brother Michael Mullens of Waldorf, MD, his son Robert Stewart Mullens, his daughter Allison Danielle Medina (Nicholaus) of Great Mills, MD, the little light of his life, his grandson Killian “Shorty” Medina, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family and friends.
Dean graduated from Thomas Stone High School in 1982, after which he became an auto repair mechanic for Sheehy Ford for 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, had a love for trot-line crabbing; seeing how many crabs he could catch in a day and afterwards would sit around with family and friends to pick them till the sun went down. Dean loved everything hunting, from whitetail deer to his favorite, turkey. His face would light up and he’d always crack up in laughter every time the turkeys would call back to him. You wouldn’t catch Dean without a fishing pole in his truck; he would never pass an opportunity to find a spot to fish at a pond, river, on a boat, with a friend, or by himself. In his free time, he loved spending time with family, friends, and his little shorty, Killian. Some of his fondest moments were running around the splash pad in the summertime chasing him with a water bucket and hearing his little laugh, and playing with him on the playground.
Dean was a hard worker, and never stopped moving. He was always there to help a friend or family member with their car, truck, boat, or even lawn mower; you’d just tell him what’s wrong and he’d say, “yeah, I’ll come take a look at it.” His love for all things motor vehicle went past the repairs as he would watch drag racing, car shows, and even had a few muscle cars of his own, from the LeMans to his prized Firebird that he’d always say “one of these days I’ll get her fixed up.” He always kept to himself but knew how to cut up around his family and close friends. Dean wasn’t a man of many words, but he loved his family immensely and will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Chris Whetlor officiating. I’ll always remember Dean as a good friend and coworker. We worked at Sheehy together for many years. I always appreciated his help when I was stumped on a car and he was always the first one to come lend a hand until we figured it out. We spent many a day eating lunch together talking about hunting and fishing. And the last 15 to 20 minutes of lunch we’d both found cars to disappear in and close our eyes and rest. Lol.
