August 7, 1974 ~ February 11, 2024

Mark Allen Steggell, 49, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, February 11, 2024 after a short, but hard-fought battle with cancer. Mark was born on August 7, 1974 in San Antonio, Texas to Wayne (Darla) Steggell and Ethel (John) Murphy. Growing up, Mark was a real-life Dennis the Menace with his various antics. His shenanigans always kept his siblings and parents on their toes. As a child, Mark enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, and fishing. He was one of the fastest kids in town, and even won a new pair of Buster Brown sneakers at a local race. He was so proud of himself and wore those shoes with pride. Being an Air Force brat, Mark lived in many places such as Texas, England, Utah, Florida, and Virginia. He graduated Herndon High School in Herndon, VA in 1992. In December of 1992, Mark joined the United States Air Force and attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. After his time in the Air Force, Mark went on to work a few different jobs until he found his home at RHP Staffing Company as a maintenance supervisor for the past ten years. As Mark got older, he remained an avid fisherman, enjoyed shooting pool, throwing darts, playing card games, video games, and hanging out at ‘The Shop’ with his girlfriend and two dogs; but his favorite past time was getting off work and cracking open an ice-cold beer. Much to many of his family members dismay, Mark was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan. Legend has it he was only a Dallas fan to ruffle the feathers of his family’s die-hard allegiance to the Washington Redskins. Mark is survived by his father, Wayne (Darla) Steggell, mother, Ethel (John) Murphy, girlfriend, Jacqueline Reuben, fur babies, Echo & Hollow, brothers, Michael (Connie) Steggell, John Murphy (Clyzzel), sisters Kelly Bell (Dave), Kayla (Randy) Pezzuti, Katlin Lily, four step siblings, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and loved ones. Mark was preceded in death by grandparents, OJ and Rosemary Richardson, Lewis and Alice Steggell, Chester and Verla Burk, and stepsister, Lynnette. Mark’s family would like to send sincere gratitude to Dr. Donita Dyalram and associates, Dr. Minal Shah and staff, and last, but certainly not least, the angels on earth, the staff at St. Mary’s Hospice. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Chris Whetlor officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.A., Leonardtown, MD.
