Fotios "George" Skouzes
October 3, 1957 ~ February 8, 2024
George was the son of George F. Skouzes and Eugine Koulopoulos. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Barbara, his stepdaughters, Lucia Osterbind (husband Tom) and Jovanna Ryan (husband Jim), his stepgrandchildren, Alexandra, Christopher, Fiona, Connor and John Paul and his sister Elaine Walsh. George died on Thursday, Feb 8, 2024 after an extended battle with cancer and heart disease at the age of 66.
He was born and raised in Washington, DC where he was baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church. He attended St. John’s College High School, then later attended Montgomery College and The University of Maryland. While attending college, he worked in a Washington, DC grocery store which he eventually bought. There, he perfected his skills with a butcher’s knife, further honed his famous cooking talent and met his wife-to-be Barbara and her two girls.
He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from The University of MD and numerous construction and safety certifications which he used to great effect throughout his long career in commercial and residential construction. From building custom homes to his recent work as a commercial construction contractor for the US Navy, George stood out for his dedication to his clients and for getting a job done right. His work ethic was tremendous.
George was quick to say that the greatest thing he ever did was to marry his wife, Barbara, on May 29th, 1988. He loved his stepdaughters as a true Dad and friend, and their families as his own. He poured out his life into caring for them all – most especially for Barbara, whom he loved beyond measure. He had a special love of his grandchildren and it brought him great joy to design fun experiences for them and to see them happy. Above all else George was a family man.
He always enjoyed being on the water boating and fishing. Eventually George and Barbara moved to the Solomons Islands area of MD to be close to their marina and boating friends. They were active members of the Spring Cove Marina and the Solomon Island Yacht Club where George volunteered his time ensuring a well-run and fun experience for all members.
George was generous and kind-hearted to all. His life was one of devotion, self-sacrifice, hard work and heart. He was a true patriot and never failed to add prayers for our service members when saying “Grace” at meals. He loved football and history. He was happiest working hard, serving others and telling jokes and stories among family and friends. He will be remembered as the life of every party, a devoted husband, stepdad, father-in-law, grandpa and friend. He is deeply missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on March 23, 2024 at 10:30 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church Solomons, MD. Interment will be private.
A repass will be held following the Mass at Solomons Island Yacht Club 14604 Solomons Island Road
Solomons, Maryland 20688.

We are so sorry to hear of George passing, he was a wonderful and great friend. We will cherish the memories of our time spent with George at Spring Cove Marina and Solomons Island Yacht Club. We will keep Barbara and her entire family in our thoughts and prayers. Love and hugs, Michelle & Steve Perrie
Hello, I just learned of George’s death. He is unforgettable. I met him in 2009 when my husband and I were trying to renovate two houses: our old home (so we could sell it) and our new home. He gave excellent advice and insisted on high standards for quality of workmanship. My heart goes out to everyone who is grieving for George.
