Today, we gather to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Mrs. Maureen Elaine “Mama Moe” McClendon, who fought through an extensive battle with cancer, in which she boldly fought & won against in one chapter of her story. However, fate would have her succumb to it in the last chapter. Maureen transitioned into eternal life & rest with Jesus Christ, on the evening of June 23rd,2024, with the oldest grandson (Baby Joe) by her side. Maureen was born on May 6th, 1953, in Queens, New York, to the late John & Rosalie Dumpson, and she was one of four children. She attended PS 171, JHS 126, and attended the Light House Church in Astoria, Queens.
The endearing nickname "Mama Moe" became a symbol of her nurturing spirit during the commemoration of her late son, "Big Joe Day," in Harlem. Known for her maternal care and kindness, she touched the lives of everyone she encountered, earning the love and respect of many, from New York City straight down to and throughout Southern, Maryland.
In July 1991, she met the love of her life, Dexter McClendon, whom she affectionately referred to as her soulmate. They relocated to Maryland in 1998 and united in holy matrimony on April 8th, 2005. Maureen was not only a devoted wife but also a resolute homemaker, mother, and grandmother, embodying unconditional love and support for her family and friends. In the last chapter as her illness took a toll on her eyesight and memory towards the end of her journey, one thing for certain, more than anything else she loved “Her Boo”, until her last breath. They shared a beautiful love story, full of memories, and a total of 33 years together.
Throughout Dexter's 25-year military career, which included service in the Maryland National Guard, and active duty for 4- of those years with the United States Navy, Maureen was his rock and pillar of strength. Her unwavering support earned her recognition and appreciation alongside her husband's achievements.
Maureen had a passion for maintaining a clean, orderly, and beautifully decorated home, adorned with elegant ornaments and statues she cherished. She took pride in her gardening skills and enjoyed tending to her yard, a shared hobby with Dexter. Her love for Atlantic City and Bingo brought her joy, even during challenging times. Maureen's family meant the world to her, evident in the countless memories captured in her multiple photo albums and treasured card collection, which she saved every card given to her and placed in a designated album. Maureen will be deeply missed but her memories will always live on.
She was preceded in death by her children Joseph Dumpson Sr. and Nakita Laquette Williams, as well as her brothers Greg L. Byers, Keith Dumpson, and God-mother Ida Young.
Maureen leaves behind to mourn her beloved husband Dexter McClendon of Maryland, her sister Margaret Johnson of North Carolina, six children – David (Eve) of Pennsylvania, Lawrence (Milli) of New Jersey, & Melvin Williams of New York, bonus children Dexter Jr., Darnell, and Kia Fields, along with 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, & cousins, as well as numerous other family and friends.
Today, as we reflect on Maureen's life, we remember her for her strength, love, and the indelible mark she left on those fortunate enough to know her. May her legacy of compassion, love, unselfishness, strength, and resilience continue to inspire us all. She will NEVER be forgotten!
