John Julius Roth, Sr.

John Julius Roth, Sr of Scotland, MD, passed away on September 15, 2024, in Leonardtown, MD. Born on April 21, 1929 in Jamaica, New York. John was the loving husband of the late Kathleen Elizabeth “Kitty†Roth, whom he married on June 23, 1951, in Astoria, NY. He is survived by his children, John Roth, Jr. of Audubon, PA, Michael Roth of Leonardtown, MD, Thomas Roth of Callaway, MD, and Terrance Roth of Scotland, MD, as well as four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his sister, Cathleen.
He moved from La Plata, MD to St. Mary’s County, MD in 1975. He worked at Readers Digest Mailhouse as a mechanic before joining with his eldest son John, to start their own Direct Mail business J.J. Mailing in 1973. They sold the business in 1989, and he took time off before assisting his son Terrance as he opened his own direct mail business in 1990.
John loved fishing, traveling, eating, and playing with his beloved cat and dog. He and his wife were avid travelers to locations all over the world, including Panama, Guatemala, Russia, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Switzerland, Dominican Republic, Thailand, Venezuela, Japan, Mexico, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Gibraltar, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Canada, and Taiwan.
He took numerous trips to fish for black marlin in Panama, and for salem and halibut in Alaska. John just returned from a weeklong fishing trip in Alaska on August 29, 2024. John could be very particular in the way he wanted things done, and was a big fan of Frank Sinatra and his favorite song was “My Wayâ€.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s City, MD, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM with Father Patrick Agustin officiating. Interment will follow in St. James Catholic Cemetery, Lexington Park, MD.
