March 14, 1946 ~ April 30, 2025

George Aloysius Nelson, Sr., 79, of Leonardtown, MD, formerly of the 7th District, passed away on April 30, 2025, at Chesapeake Shores Nursing Home, Lexington Park, MD. Born on March 14, 1946, in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late Ella Theresa Thompson and the late Mills A. Nelson. George was the loving husband of Mary Jean Stone, whom he married on November 3, 1962, in Our Lady’s Catholic Church, Leonardtown, MD. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Cheryl (Kenneth) of Leonardtown, MD, Nancy (Gary) of Callaway, MD, and George (Katie) of Mechanicsville, MD, his siblings, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, several siblings, and two grandchildren. George was a lifelong St. Mary’s County, MD resident and attended Margaret Brent School. He had several jobs over the course of his life; however, plumbing was his passion. He worked for CW Thompson Plumbing for 30 years, retiring in June 2002. George was a Life Member of the Leonardtown Fire Department and was a skilled engine driver. People were eager to get on the truck when he was in the driver’s seat, as he could maneuver the truck expertly, even in tight quarters---everyone knew George had things under control. He was also an avid NASCAR fan; his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt and watching him race reminded George of his days racing down the roads in the 50s. Another favorite was the Dallas Cowboys! He enjoyed watching them play, especially games against the Washington Commanders (Redskins). Playing cards with his friends was a favorite pastime for George. He and his friends would play poker for hours on end, sometimes with games lasting all night. This was special, not just for George, but for the rest of his family too, as a few of his poker buddies became close with them as well. He also loved gardening and would plant the most beautiful rose bushes. He tended to his garden with the utmost care and his passion for it was evident. Most of all, George was a kind-hearted family man who loved his children and would do anything for them. Among many things, he had a swimming pool in his yard that he maintained just for them; seeing their happiness brought him great joy. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with Fireman’s Prayers recited at 6:45 PM, in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD.
