Nancy Reid (Ann) Watts

Nancy Reid (Ann) Watts, 90, from Breton Bay, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the Hospice House of St. Mary’s. She was born on November 8, 1934, in Elmira, NY to William Pitcher Reid and Maybelle Gertrude Meitzler. She grew up in Solomons, MD, where she later married the love of her life, William (Bill) C. Watts on August 28, 1954. She attended Nursing School at Union Memorial in Baltimore, MD and graduated in 1955. Shortly thereafter, she and Bill moved to St. Mary’s County. In 1963, they settled in Breton Bay as the 11th home in the community. Nancy had a profound love for children which led her and Bill to become foster parents to several pre-teens while also raising their own children. She was employed by the St. Mary’s County Health Department, conducting eyesight and hearing tests for St. Mary’s County Public Schools. She concluded her career with the Health Department as a home health nurse, assisting individuals who needed further care following their discharge from the hospital. She retired in September 1996. Rather than focusing solely on her professional achievements, it is important to highlight her character and dedication to helping others. Her choice to pursue a career in healthcare stemmed from her compassionate personality and was a reflection of her innate caregiving nature. Anyone who met her knew they had met an angel on earth. Her happiest times were spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was always the center for family gatherings and holidays. Christmas breakfast was a cherished family tradition. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting and jigsaw puzzles. Later in life, Nancy became an avid reader, obtaining her first library card at the age of 87. She was always happy, smiling, singing or humming. She never met a stranger. She consistently brought joy and laughter to every person around her. The name “Meemaw” (Grandma) was known and cherished by many, as she was a legend to anyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. there are some people who have sun inside them. it’s hard to explain. their presence just brightens, it’s not about their beautiful smiles. they have an internal being that sheds light and feels like sun. it’s a calm energy inner peace. but most importantly; it’s not wanting anything back in return. it’s sun. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Watts, of 66 wonderful years and she is survived by her children: William and (Addie) Watts of Leonardtown, MD; Martha Watts and (Abbie Newhouse) of Petaluma, CA; Paul and (Marie) Watts of Leonardtown, MD and Priscilla and (Mike) Labanowski of Mechanicsville, MD. Grandchildren Billy Watts (Sarah), Keith Watts (Samantha), Crystal Short (Ray), Amber Swaim (Cory), Hanna Senatore (Dale), Brooke Wright (Nicholas), Jake Senatore and Austin Watts. Great grandchildren: Abigail Watts, Charlie Watts, John Watts, Jaycee Short and Memphis Short. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, David Watts and her brother Herbert Reid. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad, Leonardtown Fire Department or Hospice of MedStar St. Mary’s.
