Agnes "Anita" Lacey
Agnes Anita Lacey
September 12, 1935 ~ July 24, 2025
Agnes Anita Lacey, 89 of Clements passed away at her home surrounded by her loving children on July 24, 2025. She was born on September 12, 1935 in Leonardtown, MD. She was the daughter of the late Daniel Jefferson Bowles and Mary Ethel Bowles. On June 21, 1952 she married John Gilbert Lacey Sr., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bushwood, MD. They celebrated 58 years of happiness together.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Gilbert Lacey, Sr., (June 22, 2010) her oldest son Robert Samuel “Bobby” Bowles as well as an infant child Brenda Eileen Lacey.
Anita is survived by her children John Gilbert Lacey Jr., Agnes Marie Lacey, James Francis Lacey (Barbara), Mary Virginia Rice (Billy), and Barbara Eileen Jones (Harry), four grandchildren Brenda Sue Hill, Sarah Jean Springer, Jason William Rice, Amanda Jean Rice, and Jeremy Wayne Graves and Missy Payne who were like grandchildren to her and five great grand children.
Anita came from a large family, being one of 11 children; Renie Quade, Dorothy Lacey, Catherine Vandenbos, Tinka Buckler, Thomas Bowles, James Bowles, and Joseph Bowles.
Anita was preceded in death by her brother Jeff Bowles, Sr., George Bowles, and her sister Alice Thompson.
Anita was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. She was a hard working housewife that had no limits to hard work. She spent many hours working with her family in the tobacco and corn fields. She loved harvesting vegetables out of the garden and canning them to feed the family. She enjoyed sewing, placing knickknacks around her home, and taking care of her flowers, Taking care of her children and making sure they were fed and had clean clothes was a daily task that she loved doing. Anita was famous for her homemade biscuits, which we all loved to eat. If she wasn’t at the sink washing dishes, stove cooking, washing clothes, or hands in bread dough there was something seriously wrong.
Anita loved working at the Spring and Fall dinners at Sacred Heart Church in Bushwood. She enjoyed getting out with the parish family until her body wouldn’t allow it any longer. She was a devoted Catholic giving everything she had to attend weekly mass until the day came she could no longer attend. She truly missed seeing the church especially at Christmas.
The family will receive friends on August 4th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Mattingly Gardner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD where prayers will begin at 7:00 PM. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on August 5th at Sacred Heart Church, Bushwood, MD with Fr. Golas officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Clyde Farrell, Robert Lacey, Jason Rice, Jeremy Graves, Jimmy Lyon, and Brian Springer.
