George Leo "Captain George" Bean, Sr.

George Leo Bean, Sr., “Captain George”, 89, of Valley Lee, MD, passed away on November 1, 2025, in Leonardtown, MD. Born on July 17, 1936, in Valley Lee, MD, George was the son of the late Helen Genevieve Redman Bean and the late Joseph Leo Bean. He married his loving wife, Kathrine Caywood Bean (deceased), on December 31, 1978. They made their home in Valley Lee, Maryland over a span of 47 years and hosted many New Year’s Day dinners for family and friends. George is survived by his children, Cathy Gossett (Kim) of Etowah, Tennessee, Patty Hancock of Mechanicsville, Maryland, Glenda Fritz (Joe) of La Plata, Maryland, George Leo Bean, Jr. of Valley Lee, Maryland, and Tim Bean (Mike) of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; as well as eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. George is also survived by his brothers, Andrew Bean, Robert Bean (Diann), and Francis Bean (Gloria), all of Valley Lee, Maryland, as well as his sisters, Leona Unkle (Bennie) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Gennie Williams (Wayne) of Tall Timbers, Maryland, Joan Sebring (Dick) of Valley Lee, Maryland, and Evelyn Bean of Leonardtown, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William Bean, Bernie Bean, David Bean, Gregory Bean, and Johnny Bean, his sisters, Lucy Bean, Neadurra “Sissy” Hall and Sister Rosalie Bean CSSJ.
George was the third born of sixteen children. He grew up in Valley Lee, Maryland, helping his parents on the family farm. At the age of 16, he started work at the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P). He went on to have a successful career working as a store manager and retired in 1996 after 44 years of service. After retiring, George and Kathy spent much of their time fishing and hosting family members and friends on his boat, the Cathy Lynn. They traveled the Intercoastal water ways to the Florida Keys on the “Cathy Lynn” several times. They had a home in Marathon, Florida, where they fished and made lifelong friends and memories.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 10, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, in St. George’s Episcopal Church, Valley Lee, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Thornton, Jason Hancock, Kenny Sebring, Jason Bean and Jessie Bean. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Bean, Francis Bean, Robert Bean, Francis Cullison, and sisters, Gennie Williams, Leona Unkle, Joan Sebring, and Evelyn Bean.

Sorry about the loss of George. My deceased husband, Bert & I enjoyed our boating trips with George & Kathy. They came up the river for the Blessing of the Fleet back in the old days and they were great fun.
