Thomas Patrick “Tom” Maday of St. Mary’s City, Maryland, passed away on December 22, 2025, while visiting family in Arizona. Tom lived a fulfilling life as a husband, father, grandfather (Papa), brother, and friend for all his 78 years.
Tom was born on July 5, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the late Ludwig and Marian Maday. Tom’s life was a testament to the values instilled by his beloved parents, with whom he is now reunited in eternal rest.
Tom started his academic career at the University of Minnesota and finished at California Polytechnic University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After being hired by Hughes Aircraft, he soon made his way to Pax River, where he supported the Navy for the next 40 years. Driven by relentless curiosity and commitment to excellence, he furthered his education with a master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Tom’s work was instrumental in advancing naval technologies, and he was respected by colleagues and friends alike for his dedication and integrity.
On December 11, 1970, Tom married Marilyn, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that spanned 55 years. Together, they built a family that was the centerpiece of Tom’s life. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Mary Slade (Dan), TJ Maday (Cocoa), and Emily Skelly (Kevin); and his treasured grandchildren, Maddie, Tristan, Ricky, Joy, Ivy, Robby, Tiger, Logan, and Nancilyn. Tom’s sister, Pat (Dan) Kirk, and nephews Ryan and Kevin Kirk who also mourn his passing, alongside many friends and extended family members.
Tom’s heart was as expansive as his stature; he was a giant of a man with a gentle spirit. He never met a stranger. His greatest joy was being Papa to his grandchildren, whom he adored and proudly captured in countless photographs. His passion for collecting antiques, especially memorabilia from the 1939 World’s Fair, was a testament to his appreciation for history and legacy.
A man of faith, Tom was an active member of St. Cecilia’s Church in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. His commitment to the community was evident through his long-standing involvement as a board member for Historic St. Mary’s City, where he was instrumental in establishing the annual Beerfest. He was ever-present in the lives of his children and grandchildren, supporting their endeavors with the utmost enthusiasm and love.
