Esther “Kitty” Mears
December 24, 1932 – February 21, 2024
Esther “Kitty” Mears was the epitome of love, given and received. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on Christmas Eve 1932, she moved to Norway at the age of one during World War II with her parents and five siblings before returning to the US at 16. Her 91 years on Earth were full of joy - from her first marriage and the blessing of three wonderful children to her second marriage to the love of her life, Russ Mears, with whom she would spend 45 incredible years until his passing in 2019.
She began her professional journey as a driving instructor and a school bus driver, taking great joy in watching children grow. Her passion and unbounded sense of adventure took her from the road to the air as a member of the Ninety-Nines, the International Organization of Women Pilots. In 1964, she flew in the all-woman transcontinental air race, The Powder Puff Derby, where she proudly came in first place but was ultimately disqualified due to an emergency landing in a corn field as her plane ran out of fuel.
Her brave spirit took her into the final move of her career with the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence, where she spent 27 years as a computer analyst before retiring from the workforce and starting the next phase of her life’s adventure. She joined Russ, a truck driver, back on the open road and explored the United States from coast to coast for the next four years, soaking up as much of North America as possible.
She spent the remaining years of her life surrounded by family, and will be remembered and forever missed by her children Vivian, Diana and Robert, her sisters, Ellen and Elsa-Marie, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and every one of the many hearts she touched over her lifetime.
Keep cruising, Kitty… your legacy will endure.

Kitty was such a beautiful soul inside and out. I loved our times together at car shows and sitting in her kitchen drinking coffee our our diet (lol) cake. She always welcomed everyone with that beautiful smile. I will treasure those memories forever. Rip, my dear friend.
Dear Rob, Diana and Vivian,
I was so sorry to hear about your Mom. I am so fortunate to have my last memory of her being a visit, by Joyce and I, with Esther and Russ, at their place on the Potomac River. We spent the weekend with them and will always remember taking a ride on Russ’s cigar boat. This is just the way I want to remember her. She was happy, vibrant and full of life. Your Mom was such a special person to all of us in our childhood. Rob, although time, distance and life in general has separated us, more than either of us would like, you are still considered one of my 2 lifetime friends that I still stay in touch with even though at times it has been difficult. Your Mom was loved by our whole family and we hold such great memories of her!
God Bless
Love all of you and miss you all,
Bob and Joyce Zoeller
There are memories of my “Aunt Esther” that will forever warm my heart. She was a woman had a life story worth telling for all to hear or read. I especially remember those days when we all lived on Hawthorne St in N, Massapequa. Aunt Esther is the one who, without knowing it, determined my first career choice of the US Air Force. She took me on my very first plane ride when I was very young, and was hooked on my love of flight forever. When I was stuck in a military hospital at Langley due to injury, Russ and Aunt Esther opened their door to me, They gave me comfort and a sense of home that I needed at that time.
So to you Robert, Vivian, and Diane you all should know that the world lost one of it’s shining lights with the passing of your mother.
With much love,
Johnny Zoeller
