Agnes Celestine Poe
December 24, 1924 ~ December 29, 2025
Agnes Celestine Greenwell Poe passed peacefully in her sleep on December 29, 2025, after a long life and a short illness. She had just celebrated her 101st birthday.
Born on December 24,1924 in Hollywood, MD, she was the daughter of the late Valley Ignatius and Blanche Elizabeth (Jones) Greenwell. Agnes was preceded in death by all of her siblings; Evelyn, Nace, Mary, Chester, Elmer, Dorothy, Margaret and Sonny.
She grew up working on the family farm and at a family business at Town Creek. As a young woman fresh out of high school, Agnes ventured to Washington DC where she and a girlfriend lived, after taking a job working at the Veterans Administration. She enjoyed life in ‘the big city’ taking in the sites, meeting new people, and dancing.
She married Franklin “Toadie” Poe in August 1944 after first meeting him at a dance. They had two children, Donnie and Darlene, and lived and built their life on St. George’s Island, MD. Agnes and Toadie shared 52 years together before his passing in 1996.
Agnes relocated to Valley Lee, MD in 2005, where she was closer to family. She was an avid bingo hall queen, a challenging Rummikub player (had to watch her creating her own rules), a great southern food cook (duck and dumplings was a specialty), and a devout Catholic. She absolutely loved singing in the church choir (even if sometimes a bit off-key), rocking her great and great-great grandbabies, and enjoyed planting flowers to enjoy their beauty. Agnes loved having visitors drop in to check on her and catch up on all the latest happenings close to home.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Toadie, and grandson Donnie Poe, Jr. She is survived by her children, Donnie Poe (Betty) and Darlene Janiszewski (Tom); grandchildren Chandra Poe Goddard, Jeff Janiszewski (Tammy), Karen Poe, and Todd Janiszewski (Marcie); great-grandchildren Mitchell Goddard (Morgan Thompson), Dominic Janiszewski (Chloe), Tori Kidd (Winston), Mason Goddard, and Alex Kearns and great-great grandchildren Gauge Goddard, Oakley Goddard, and Bodhi Kidd.
Agnes was a constant presence in the lives of her family and friends and will be missed beyond words.
Interment with a graveside service will be held at a later date.
Condolences may be made to the family at www.mgfh.com.

Mrs Poe was a wonderful lady that I had the pleasure to know for the last year of her life. Loved her singing and praying. I often joined her. I feel privileged having known her and the knowledge she had of the county was phenomenal. RIP Mrs. Poe. You ascended into heaven and I know you are a beautiful angel.
Mrs.Poe was a blessing to care for. Thank you for trusting us and allowing us to love and care for her. She was the sweetest soul. I will forever miss our singing sessions that we shared from Amazing Grace to Jesus Loves Me. Rest in peace Mrs.Poe, love you always.
