Andrew Derek (Andy) Thompson, 44, of Lexington Park, Maryland, passed away on October 10, 2026, at home. Andy was born on September 24, 1982, in Leonardtown, Maryland. He is survived by his parents, Gene Thompson, Connie/Craig Long, his brothers, Wesley Thompson and Brandon Thompson; his stepbrothers, Aaron Long and Corey Long; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Andy’s life was filled with fun, excitement, lasting friendships, and the determination to face challenging health issues. He completed his education at Leonardtown High School, having also attended Green Holly and Carver Elementary Schools.
For more than 25 years, Andy participated in Special Olympics St. Mary’s County, competing in basketball, bowling, cycling, bocce, snowshoeing, track, and soccer. Among his many athletic highlights were his impressive basketball jump shot, racing his three-wheeled bike in 500-meter, 1K, and 2K events, and finding the palina among the bocce balls. On his bike, Andy could truly fly, and cycling gave him a wonderful sense of freedom.
Andy was blessed with friends and family who appreciated his musical talents and great sense of humor. He enjoyed attending concerts in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he saw performers including Josh Turner, Aaron Tippin, The Beach Boys, a tribute to Johnny Cash, and the Oak Ridge Boys.
Some of Andy’s most meaningful memories came from his time at the Center for Life Enrichment. He enjoyed recycling cardboard boxes, assembling hospital packets, and reading water meters for the local water company. He and his supervisor even had a special way of celebrating a good day: earning a certificate of accomplishment. These certificates meant a great deal to Andy, and he took tremendous pride in what he achieved.
Music and dancing were among Andy’s favorite pastimes. He had an incredible collection of CDs and knew the words to countless songs, creating extensive playlists that brought him enjoyment day after day. Music was a special part of his life and something he loved sharing with others.
Andy loved his family and friends and truly enjoyed being at the center of the action. He also developed special relationships with the staff at several local restaurants, where he became a familiar and cherished presence. His smile could brighten any room, and his humor and personality made him memorable to those who knew him.
Andy will be remembered for his love of music, his athletic accomplishments, his determination, his friendships, and the joy he brought to the people around him. His life touched many people, and the memories he created will continue to be treasured by his family, friends, caregivers, and community.
Andy was fortunate to have many wonderful caregivers throughout his life, including Karena Price, Kathy Cerwensky, Dennis Miller, and his Aunt Cathy Pfeiffer.
