Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 9, 2006 at 10:00 AM in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Avenue, MD with Fr. John Barry officiating. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bushwood, MD. Visitation: Viewing/Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2006 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers will be said at 4:00 PM. Cecelia Catherine Short, 86, of Avenue, MD departed this earth on Thursday, October 5, 2006. Born in River Springs, MD on August 27, 1920, she was the daughter of the late James Darby and Anna Elizabeth Hobbs Jones. Catherine worked for many years as a housekeeper and was a devoted assistant to the Donaldson family. She enjoyed cooking, playing bingo, going to church, and listening to gospel music. Catherine was a sweet loving person and never had a harsh word to say about anyone. She was preceded in death by her husband William McCormick Short, daughter Mary Jane Briscoe; sisters: Anna Louise Jones, Mary Ada Carter; brothers, Bernard Jones, Darby Jones, Jr, John Edward Jones, Kenneth Jones and Dawkins Jones and granddaughter Carla Short. She leaves to mourn her children James Short, Shirley Short, Grace Short all of Lexington Park, MD and Catherine (Cathy) Washington of Avenue, MD. She also leaves to mourn a wonderful loving sister, Mary Mack and brother-in-law, James (Jimmy) Mack of Colton's Point, MD. She is survived by her grandchildren: Coretta Short, Darlene (George) Holly, of Lusby, MD; Arthur (Kim) Short, Leon Short, Carl Jones, Terry (Delores) Jones, Monica Jones, Mary Washington all of Lexington Park, MD, Gregory (Loretta) Jones of Great Mills, MD; Bridgette (James) Harris of Waldorf, MD; Joe (Yvette) Short of Mechanicsville, MD, Raphael (Tonya) Short of Oakville, MD; Colleen Peterson of Fayetteville, NC; Samantha (Darrin) McGhee of Virginia Beach, VA, and Demonte Washington of Germany. She also leaves to mourn 29 great grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family received friends on Sunday, October 8, 2006 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home.
