charles lumpkins
Charles Ronald Lumpkins, known to all as Ronnie, was born to Benjamin Franklin Lumpkins and Mary Olive Lumpkins (McNeal) on February 1, 1945, in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. He was raised and lived his entire life in Piney Point, Maryland. He was schooled in the St. Mary’s County Public School system. He married Anne Florence Lumpkins (Knott) on September 30, 1966 and celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing on June 4, 2025. He worked hard at whatever he did and faced many challenges through his years, the final being dementia. He served in the National Guard until he sustained a severe work- related injury at Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship in Piney Point. He made a full recovery and went on to work self-employed at various business ventures he had with his family and with his wife. He was a business partner with his father and brother at Lumpkins’ Seafood where he loved the hard work of crabbing, oystering and fishing on the river and surrounding creeks. He was physically strong and strong willed. He and his wife owned a restaurant in Piney Point called “The Captain’s Table”. Together they owned an apartment building in Piney Point named “Country Lane Apartments”. He supported his wife in her endeavors of becoming an ordained minister and creating a church in Callaway named “Christian Fellowship Center”. He spent many hours and years working for the Lord at the church in Callaway. Later in life, he and his wife bought “Take It Easy Campground” and ran it together successfully until his retirement after his diagnosis of dementia. He was known to all as a gentle, kind-hearted man who loved the Lord with all his heart. He felt compelled to speak to anyone that would listen about his greatest love, Jesus. He impacted so many lives through his faith, generosity, and kindness. He is the father of one daughter, Theresa Anne Mitchell. He was an involved and loving father and grandfather to his daughter and two granddaughters, Gracie Anne Cullison and Lily Elizabeth Cullison. His love for work and people made him a very well-liked person in the local watermen community, his campground community, and church. He inspired many with his strength and stamina, especially during adversity. He will be remembered by all for his calm demeanor, paired with his desire to never be rushed. His common quip, “I stay ready, to keep from getting ready” was a joke to whoever he told it to because everyone knew he took his time and wanted to do things right, without getting in a hurry. He was a man of few words, but what he said was meaningful. In addition to the family mentioned above, he is survived by his siblings Carolyn Roehm of West Palm Beach, Florida; Bruce Lumpkins of Piney Point, Maryland and Melody Clinton of Onancock, Virginia; his nephews Keith and Kyle and nieces Brittany, Janey, Stella, and Michelle, as well as a host of extended family and friends. A celebration of life service and memorial will be held on June 16 at 6:30 pm. The service will be at Take It Easy Campground in Callaway, Maryland. Condolences may be made to the family at www.mgfh.com. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.A., Leonardtown, MD.
