I am Colleen’s former landlord. I wrote this letter to Kathy, John and Dante.
I will never forget, and I will never stop repeating to people the beautiful transition story that touched my heart. I remember how diligently I prayed for God to send the right resident that matched my seemingly impossibly short apartment renovation goals. The unit was vacant for over two months and wasn’t good enough for so many people. I was hurt. I had exhausted myself with having exchanges and speaking with hundreds of online applicants and some in person.
Enter Colleen and Dante on that warm, quiet Sunday morning. As I saw and listened to Colleen and Dante tell me so much of their challenging story, I fell in love with them as a couple. I expressed to them how much I would like us all, including my wife, to go on a bike ride and picnic. As they spoke, I could feel and imagine God smiling. I could sense Him confirming that they were my blessings.
Colleen had such beautiful eloquence when she spoke and in her writing that inspired hope. Colleen wanted that apartment without any renovations. I was deeply hurt when they told me about the poor conditions of their previous apartment. I told Colleen and Dante many times felt God placed it in my heart to give the best accommodations I could afford. I indeed went broke giving them my best because I love them so much.
She was so gracious towards me when I missed my renovation deadline by a few days. It motivated me to provide a home that matched their warmth. At every opportunity, I gently shared the importance of a stronger relationship with our Heavenly Father. I would send worship songs on occasion.
When I last spoke to her Friday or Saturday, I sent her this worship song https://youtu.be/omdzs6cbPtc. I asked Colleen to listen to the music repeatedly and imagine God wrapping his arms around her in adoration. I told her to cry out all her fears, hurt, and pain in the presence of her Heavenly Father, and He will comfort her. She promised to listen to the worship song and remain in His presence until she felt His unconditional love. I asked her to call me immediately afterward to share her worship experience. She never called me back. God placed it in my heart to visit her and worship with her. I never got a chance to worship with her. When I found out she passed, it hurt me so deeply. But I draw comfort in thinking she worshiped God as she transitioned, and my song ushered her into the arms of her beloved Father.
Every interaction with your family leading to the signing of the lease and beyond was such a blessed experience. When we all talked together, discussed the lease, and pledged support to Colleen and Dante, I could feel the warmth of you and your husband. I was touched by how unconditional your love was toward your niece. The way you stood behind them was heroic. When Collen first spoke about the accomplishment of her aunt and uncle, I was curious to look you all up. I was awestruck by how your actions matched my dreams. Immediately you and your husband were like celebrities to me. The more I learned, the more I was impressed with your achievements. It is priceless to know your wonderful hearts matched your heroic public work. Your courage makes me even bold to help loved ones.
With Love and Warmest Regards,
