Dorothy Ann Cullison
April 10, 1935 ~ August 14, 2018
Dorothy Ann Moran Cullison, of Great Mills, Maryland, passed away peacefully at her home on August 14, 2018. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 10, 1935, in Hollywood, Maryland, Dorothy Ann was the daughter of the late Oliver Wellington Moran and Lillian Adams Moran. Dorothy Ann was a lifelong St. Mary’s County resident. She completed primary school at St. John’s and graduated from Great Mills High School.
On June 5, 1954, she married the love (and dance) partner of her life, John Joseph (“Johnny”) Cullison of Ridge, Maryland. After 10 years of employment at Southern Maryland Electric Company, Dorothy Ann worked alongside Johnny to build Cullison Sheet Metal, Heating and Air and Cullison rentals. They celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage before Johnny’s passing in 2007.
Dorothy Ann was an active member of Holy Face Catholic Church for 65 years; she supported her faith community and Little Flower School through many decades of service with the Holy Face Ladies of Charity. She spent many years as a volunteer for HOPE ministries and other local charities.
Dorothy Ann loved spending time with her family and her wide circle of friends. Her hobbies included bowling with her beloved Chatterbox League teammates for more than 50 years, dancing and playing card games, and organizing the annual famed Chatterbox Atlantic City girls trip. She enjoyed fishing and crabbing, hosting and bringing family and friends together over food, fellowship and horseshoes. Her family was her greatest pride and joy; she loved spending time with them, especially her grandchildren. She achieved “favorite aunt” status of many nieces and nephews and was “MaMa” to many.
Dorothy Ann is survived by her son Mark Alan Cullison (Dana) and her daughter Stacie Cullison Heller (Jim), grandsons John Joseph Cullison II, Jacob Alan Cullison, John Thomas Heller, granddaughters Jessica Marie Cullison and Lillian (“Lily”) Victoria Heller, sisters-in-law Eleanor Hogan Cullison of Lexington Park, Maryland, Leigh Cullison Alvey of Great Mills, Maryland, Shirley Cullison Skrabacz (Ted) of Lexington Park, Maryland, Jane Moran of Hollywood, Maryland, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and a loving extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Lucille Moran Morgan, Margaret “Regina” Moran Tucker, Harriet Moran Norris and James O. Moran.
Dorothy Ann’s family will receive friends at the Mattingly-Gardiner Funeral Home in Leonardtown, MD on Friday, August 17 from 5-8 PM with prayers at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM in Holy Face Catholic Church Great Mills, MD with Father Jerry Gamrot officiating. Mark/Stacie and Families,
Words cannot express the sorrow we feel over the loss of our beloved Aunt Dottie. Your mother was so special to all of us who knew and loved her. Please know that our prayers are with you all during this very difficult time. May God give us all comfort in knowing that she is at peace now with Him and Uncle Johnny in heaven. They will never be far from us as the wonderful family memories we have will keep them close in our hearts forever.
Love Always,
Mike, Karen and Family
Prayers for comfort in the hearts of all who knew and loved Dottie. Her sweet smile and gentle ways are what I will always remember about her, as well as her love for her family. For years, Dottie took part in activities at Loffler- and she made our Mondays & Fridays a bit nicer with each visit. Rest in Peace, sweet Dottie.
John and I are so sadden to learn of our friend Dorothy’s passing. We have wonderful memories of good times. She truly was a special angel who blessed all who knew her. Our love and prayers to the family. She will be missed.
Another of the good ones has been taken from us. Dottie was truly a wonderful lady. I know my mom (Julie) has lost a very dear friend. Hope your cherished memories will get you through this difficult time.
Aunt Dorothy Ann will be missed. Always hospitable, laughing with her sisters at family gatherings, and a great dance partner!
Aunt Dottie was such an amazing mentor with joy in her heart,( and a joke in her thoughts). She will surely be missed by so many.
Our prayer is that the Lord brings to all who were touched by her gentle spirit the much needed peace during this sad time.
“Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praised her. There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” Proverbs 31:28-29.
Growing up in Great Mills, I have many fond memories of Mr. and Mrs. Cullison. The family was the best of families. The Ladies of Charity of Holy Face Church had a wonderful time together, not just at church but with their bowling league and trips to Atlantic City. My mom would share their stories! Mrs. Cullison always had a smile on her face and now she joins the rest of the Ladies of Charity and John J. in heaven. Hugs and sympathy to the family.
My most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Mark, Dana, Stacie, and their families. Dottie was a wonderful person with the biggest heart who was loved by many. May your lifetimes of memories provide some comfort in your loss.
Mark, Dana, & Stacie, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. Mrs. Cullison was truly a lovely, wonderful lady that we had the pleasure to know. She has many wonderful ladies that she knew from church, along with her husband, waiting to welcome her home to the Lord. May God keep you all close as you feel her loss and may the memories you have give you comfort and know that as you share her stories, you keep her alive in your hearts. Blessings to you.
My deepest condolences to the Cullison family. My early memories of Mrs. Cullison date back to 1968 when I had the pleasure to work for Cullison Sheet Metal during my summer break from college. The greatest reward for me from that brief time was getting to know John J. and Mrs Cullison. She was a wonderful person as was her husband. Together they raised a terrific family, grew a great business and were tremendous contributors to their church and community. Although it is a sad loss, we can take solace in the fact that they are reunited now. Frank Taylor
