Dorothy Elaine "Lainie" Mattingly

Dorothy Elaine “Lainie” Mattingly of Mechanicsville, MD passed away at University of MD Capital Region Medical Center in Upper Marlboro with her loving family by her side, reuniting with her beloved husband Bobby and son Jerry.  Born on July 11,1938 in Oraville, MD she was the daughter of the late Francis Xavier Wood, Sr and Nellie Russell Buckler.

Elaine graduated from Margaret Brent High School in 1956 and was voted Best All-Around Athlete, lettering in Basketball, Baseball and Cheerleading.  The Federal Bureau of Investigations recruited her senior year, and she accepted a secretarial position in Washington DC taking dictation from Agents in their Espionage Department.  After a year she returned to St. Mary’s County to marry the love of her life, Bobby Mattingly.  Elaine then began a career at SMECO that lasted 47 years, she started as a clerk typist and advanced to Executive Assistant to the President, retiring in 2005 at the age of 67. She was very fond of her SMECO career, the people she met and the friends she made, she continued to read their newsletters cover to cover.

Elaine was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend, lending an ear to whoever visited or called.  She was an exceptional duck pin bowler in her early years, earning highest score and set.  Her retirement years included volunteering for the St. Mary’s County Fair, serving as County Election Judge, spending time with family, teaching them how to stuff a ham and always cheering on the Washington Redskins.

Elaine was married to Robert Louis “Bobby” Mattingly on December 29,1957 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mechanicsville, MD.  They were married over 57 years before his death in 2015. She called Leonardtown her home for 60 years.  They had three children: Cheryl Mattingly Thuot (Pierre) of Hollywood, MD, Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Mattingly (passed in 2012), Brenda Kay Mattingly (Joe) of Mechanicsville, MD, and a special nephew who was like a son to her, Tom Bellere (Nancy).  She is survived by four grandchildren: Christopher Thuot (Miriam), Nicole Mattingly Kosky (Mike), Kelsey Mattingly (Matthew), Danielle Thuot; and seven great-grandchildren: John-Paul, Holden, McKenzie, Everett, Bentzon, Aspen, and Mattingly (Mattie) to whom she was known as Grammy.  Elaine is also survived by her siblings Carolyn Jenkins, Hamilton (Bubba) Wood, Winston Wood, Carlton Wood, and Diane Scholten.  Along with her parents, husband and son, she is predeceased by her brothers, Francis Wood, Jr and Donald Wood, and sister Patricia Johnson.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 9:00 AM -10:00 AM at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD. Where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:00 AM with Father David Beaubien officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.  Pallbearers will be Kevin Bellere, Rayner Blair, Keith Hewitt, Mike Kosky, Christopher Thuot, and Tony Wood.
