Ella Elizabeth Neal
May 11, 1940 ~ February 8, 2018
Ella E. Neal, 77, of Hollywood, Maryland peacefully departed this life on February 8, 2018 surrounded by family. Ella was born on May 11, 1940 to the late Ella and Mason Hebb in Leonardtown, Maryland. Ella was preceded in death by James W. Neal, her loving husband of 50 years, siblings Jimmy Hebb, Randolph Hebb, and Julia Edgeston. She is survived by her youngest brother William Hebb (Helen) of Hollywood, Maryland. Ella leaves behind her brother in law George Neal (Maria) and sisters in law Alice Showell, Susie Miles and Gloria Neal. Ella’s union with James produced two children, Joyce of Chaptico, Maryland, and Jay (Caroline) of Owings, Maryland, and five grandchildren (Sydney, Rian, Mekhi, Grant and Jada). Aunt “Sissy” as she was affectionately known also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will miss her wisdom, insight, guidance and compassion.
After receiving her teaching degree from the State Teachers College at Bowie in 1962, graduating 3rd in her class, Ella devoted over 40 years of faithful classroom instruction for St. Mary’s County public schools. She was recognized as teacher of the year in 1971. Her retirement from teaching in 2005 allowed her to more fully pursue her main passion, community service. Ella discovered the after school hours “flow mentoring” program at her alma mater Banneker. There she assisted dozens of student to reach their potential in mathematics. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was another recipient of Ella’s volunteer spirit. Ella was especially fond of one of their charter events, the Christmas angel tree. The onset of fall was Ella’s time to focus on ensuring that hundreds of gifts were ready for delivery to the families of the under privileged. Ella was also a long time member of the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary. Her hobbies weren’t just limited to community service and charity work. You could often find her tirelessly working on putting together complex jigsaw puzzles, attending events sponsored by the alumni of Banneker High School (class of 1958), enjoying the show “Dancing with the Stars” on Monday nights and supporting her late husband’s love of tractor pulling. Between volunteer commitments Ella was frequently known to assist her grandchildren, ranging in age from 10 to 16, in any number of ventures and fund raising activities. Nothing would be denied in affording her grandchildren the best educational opportunities available.
While we mourn her loss deeply, we are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our humble mother and will forever cherish her memory.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 6:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 10:00 AM in St. Aloysius Catholic Church Leonardtown, MD with Father Rory Conley officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens Leonardtown, MD.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Another great person has gone home. My prayers are with you.
Condolences to your family. One may think we will all be forced to confront death sooner or later. Its painful sting has caused many people to search for answers. Why did Jesus compare death to sleep? What can we learn from resurrections recorded in the Bible? Does death end it all? Acts 24:15 says there will be a resurrection of the righteous and unrighteous. Can you imagine the joy of Martha and Mary when Jesus raised Lazarus back to life?—Read John 11:21-24, 38-44. Revelation 21:3,4 promises that one day death, mourning, and outcry will be no more.
The members of the Leonardtown Volunteer EMS and Auxiliary mourn the passing of Miss Ella and offer the family grace, peace and comfort. She and Walter are reunited again and we will continue to miss them. She was a faithful supporter, quiet but strong. Rest in peace Miss Ella.
So sorry for the loss of your Mom. May God give you strength to bear this loss, as only He can do. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
My prayers and sympathies go to the family. Mrs. Neal was an outstanding teacher who loved her students. She expected excellence and she brought out the best in them. She devoted many hours of unpaid tutoring to her students. She would come in early, stay late, and come in during the summer. Mr. Neal leaves a legacy of excellence.
My most heart felt thoughts and prayers are extended to all of Ella’s family. She and Walter gave so much of themselves to our community. I’m sure Walter greeted her with open arms at heaven’s gate. Always a smile and a helping hand. I’ll miss her so much.
Mrs. Neal taught me in fourth, fifth grade at Banneker and was an outstanding teacher. In later years after high school, I saw her and thanked her for the teaching style used during my early learning years. My condolences to the family, she will never be forgotten by me. God bless you all.
I met Mrs. Neal when she joined the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Aloysius Church. She worked many hours helping with the St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Walk. I will remember her for her quiet wisdom and how thoughtful she was. She was a wonderful example of how a life should be led. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. She will be missed.
Condolences to your family.
Dr. Neal,
I’m very sorry to read about the passing of your mother. I had the pleasure of meeting her years ago at the grocery store, having no idea she was your mother. After we chatted, and I learned that she was your mother, I thought well the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. She was so pleasant and very sweet. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones.
Ms. Ella worked tirelessly and joyfully helping so many in our community. I echo the statement from her family: “While we mourn her loss deeply, we are extremely proud of her accomplishments and will forever cherish her memory.” God bless you in your sorrow.
Dr. Neal and all Ms. Ella’s family. We’re so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was always so easy to talk to, such a happy disposition. I loved spending time with her when I would bring her the most Holy Eucharist. She was such a generous giver and always was putting into action her generosity. I loved working with her on the Angel tree project – she by her commitment made so many happy children at Christmas. Please know she’ll be greatly missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.
God Bless, Cece & Mike
Condolence from Mary Jones
I was sorry to hear of Ella’s passing. She was a kind and caring person. She was always willing to give support when she could. I attended Banneker School and Bowie University the same as Ella. During my Student Teaching at Banneker School, she transported me safely and freely to and from Banneker. She gave me encouraging support as my mentor. Ella was a great Teacher. I will miss conversing with her after church and various events. May God bless Ella and her family.
Our heart felt throughs and prayers are extended to the family. Mrs Neal was an outstanding teacher, firm but caring and devoted. I am proud that she was one of my teachers.
My deepest sympathy to Ella’s family.
Joyce
So sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. She is together with your dad now. RIP
Please accept our sincere sympathy on the passing of your mom. She was such a great woman. May God comfort you and give you peace.
My deepest sympathies to the family. It is evident that Miss Ella was deeply loved and greatly appreciated by those who knew her. I know that this is a very difficult time for you and I hope you are able to find comfort in the inspired words of our Creator, who is near to the brokenhearted and eager to strengthen us in times of need (Psalm 34:18; Isaiah 40:28, 29). I also hope that you are able to draw strength from the love that surrounds you via family and friends.
I am still heartbroken by the news Dr. Neal gave to me today. My family is, too. Just remembering all the things she has said over the years, her wisdom, her generosity, and big heart makes the tears turn into smiles. God love all of you.
