Services:
A funeral service will be held at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Mechanicsville, MD on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Philip Ayers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation:
Public visition will be held on Monday, June 21, 2004 from 4 - 8 PM with prayers being held 7:00 PM and Fire Department Prayers at 7:15 PM.
Elmer Aloysius "Pop" Johnson, 82, of Mechanicsville, MD died June 17, 2004 in Washington, DC. Born April 10, 1922 in Morganza, MD, he was the son of the late Annie Myrtle Williams Johnson and Francis Vernon Johnson. He was the loving husband of Eva Elizabeth Diehl Johnson, whom he married April 28, 1948 in Nicholas Chapel at NAS Patuxent River, MD. He was the devoted father of Robert E. Johnson and his wife Pat and Glenda C. Hill and her husband Larry all of Mechanicsville and Deborah J. Garner and her husband Glenn of Hollywood, MD. He was the brother of Joseph Floyd Johnson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Raymond V. Johnson, William J. Johnson and Anna Myrtle Lyon all of Mechanicsville and the late Francis Edward Johnson, James H. Johnson, George S. Johnson and Elizabeth Aileen Dotson. He is survived by six grandchildren; Kimberly S. Johnson, Matthew D. Hill, Brady E. Garner, Lindsey D. Hill, Kyle G. Garner and Korey S. Garner. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren; Jasmine E. Berry and Devin B. Johnson-Russell. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Sheri L. Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong St. Mary's County resident who was employed for 28 years as a Professional Firefighter for the NAS Patuxent River Fire Department until his retirement in January of 1973. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the United States Army from December 18, 1942 until October 18, 1945. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Veterans of Helen and the Southern Maryland Antique Power Association. He enjoyed hunting, camping with family, working on antique engines and small farm equipment. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 21, 2004 from 4 â?? 8 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where prayers will be said at 7:00 PM and Fire Department Prayers will be held at 7:15 PM. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 10:00 AM in the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, with Rev. Philip Ayers officiating. Pallbearers will be Matthew D. Hill, Kyle G. Garner, Korey S. Garner, David Diehl, Harold Younger and Henry J. Fowler. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kimberly Johnson, Brady E. Garner, Lindsey Hill, Chuck Page, Jimmy Burroughs, Dallis Hill and members of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department.
