Evelyn Louise (Shaw) Garland also fondly known as Sam, born on May 17, 1939, in Bangor, Maine, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on July 12, 2026, in Callaway, MD.
Evelyn was born and raised in Bangor, Maine. Evelyn married Andrew, and together they moved to Maryland to begin their life. Evelyn was a devoted stay-at-home mother for much of her children’s lives. In addition to raising her own children, she lovingly cared for many other children through the years, opening her home and heart to those around her.
Evelyn was selfless and a mother to everyone who needed love, comfort, or care. She was strong in her faith and lived her life with kindness, generosity, and a giving heart. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She could often be found roller skating, coloring, baking, or shopping, enjoying the simple moments that brought happiness to her and those around her.
As her children grew, Evelyn began working at KAB Educational Supply and later at Dy-Dee Diaper Service. She retired when she and Andrew moved to St. Mary’s County, but retirement did not last long. Evelyn spent many years working in the gas booth at the Burchmart in Charlotte Hall. It became her favorite job because she loved spending her days seeing and talking with customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. Upon her final retirement, she moved to Cedar Lane in Leonardtown, Maryland, where she spent her days welcoming new residents, organizing activities and book club gatherings, and driving residents to doctors’ appointments and grocery shopping.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Dorthy and Herman Chick, husband, Andrew Baker Garland, Jr, her brothers Herman Chick, Jr., and Ricky Chick, and her sister Judith Dunning.
She is survived by her loving children: Andrew Baker Garland III and his wife, Marion; Tracy Lynn Garland Schlosser and her husband, Andrew; and Lisa Garland Farrell and her husband, Ronald. Also, her sisters Jacqueline (Shaw) Thorne and Jacquelyn (Chick) Dubay and her brother William Shaw, Jr.
She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Cynthia Marie Cavey and her husband, Jeremy; Ricky “TJ” King, Jr. and his wife, Paula; Hannah Johnson and her husband, Kevin; and Jakob Garland.
Evelyn was blessed with three great-grandchildren Kevin “Kip” Johnson III., Noelle Johnson, and Madeline Johnson.
Evelyn will be remembered for her generous heart, unwavering faith, and the love she gave so freely to her family, friends, and community.
Services will be held at Mattingly-Gardner Funeral Home in Leonardtown, Maryland, on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with a service beginning at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life will immediately follow at a location to be announced.
