Gladys "Lavern" Wasson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gladys “Lavern” Wasson, beloved mother, homemaker, and cherished friend. Born on February 21, 1939, in Bay Minette, Alabama, Lavern graced the world with her presence for 87 wonderful years, leaving behind love and memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.

Lavern graduated from Baldwin County High School in 1957, and shortly thereafter, she embarked on a beautiful journey when she married Fredrick Wasson in Perdido, Alabama, on December 19, 1957. Her spirit of nurturing and caring flourished as she embraced her role as a devoted homemaker. In 1974, she relocated from Norfolk, VA, to Mechanicsville, MD, where she continued to create a warm and welcoming home for her family.

A devoted member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 26, Lavern dedicated herself to serving others and advocating for those who have served our country. Her unwavering support and compassion extended to her community and beyond.

Lavern is survived by her loving daughter, Theresa McCollum of Mechanicsville, MD, her son, Kenneth Wasson of Great Mills, MD, Seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Her legacy will continue to shine brightly through them, as they carry forward her values of kindness and love.

Preceded in death by her husband Fredrick Wasson, son Michael Wasson and both parents, Thomas and Lita (Presley) Brown.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, funeral services to follow at 10:30 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s and Hospice House of St. Mary’s.
