Harvey Ignatius "Bill" Bailey, 82, of Avenue, MD passed away 19 October 2005 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home after a lengthy illness following a stroke. Born 4 February 1923 to Francis Harvey and Marie Mattingly Bailey of Chestnut Hill Farm in Avenue. He was a life long resident of St. Mary's County. He attended Sacred Heart School in Bushwood and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1941. He served on the Destroyer, DD 125 USN Tattnall during WWII and received his honorable discharge in 1945. Postwar he came home to the family farm to help his father. In the ensuing years he served the community in the Farm Bureau, the ASC office, the 7th District Optimist Club, the VFW; then his 2 passions Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Post 221, where he served a multitude of officers over the years. On November 20, 1954 he married Ms. Mary Rose Woodburn of Bushwood. They adopted their sons Michael in 1963 and Mark in 1965, whom survive him and are grateful to all their friends and family. His interests were serving his church, the farm, the VFD, Post 221, a good ballgame, a good movie, especially John Wayne and Andy Griffith, fast cars, good stories and especially a good joke, always with a smile and sparkle in his eye. In later years he tinkered about the farm on projects and guided the farm on projects and guided the farm operation now run by his son Michael. He thoroughly enjoyed his son Michael's horses and the cavalry unit in which he rides. In the horses it brought back many memories for dad as a youth. We would often find him leaning on a fence post watching them. The cavalry unit will be providing a special tribute to him, as well as Navy honors and the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department, along with Departments from across the state. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 21, 2005 from 4:00 â?? 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where prayers will be said ay 7:00 PM.
