Helen Elaine Wright, 91, of Great Mills, MD, formerly of Bluefield, WV, passed away on March 27, 2023 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on April 8, 1931, in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late Mattie B. Short and the late Charles Short. Helen was the loving wife of the late William B. Wright, whom she married on May 29, 1959, and who preceded her in death on May 23, 2007. She is survived by her children Cindy Wright of Great Mills, MD, Debbie Welsh of Great Mills, MD, Becky Hall (Tommy) of Leonardtown, MD, and Sharon Gonzalez (Abel) of Great Mills, MD, her sisters Irene Prisen of MD and Joyce Smith of WV, as well as 14 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her siblings Robert Short, Elizabeth Alcorn, Willis Short, Danny Short, Beula Duncan, Vernie Willenborg, Jackson “Jack” Short, and Paul Short.
Helen moved to St. Mary’s County, MD from Bluefield, WV in 1958.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 9:30 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Jarred Welsh, Wil Warren, Jordan Welsh, Kyle Morris, Tyler Morris, and Bradley Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be Casey Curley, Morgan Jones, Michael Warren, Darren Grimes, Abreeonna Gonzalez, and Alexis Gonzalez.

Helen I will miss out talks and your advice on gardening. You sure knew your plants and how to tend to them. You taught me alot. You taught my sons how to swim, and most of all you were the best grandma. I will miss you, Rest in Peace.
Helen was one of the sweetiest, kindest person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. This women would give you everything she had if she thought you needed the help. She will be missed by many. I am sure that God welcomed her home with open arms.
