January 8, 1946 ~ September 25, 2024

Janice M. Abell, 78, of California MD passed Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at home. She was born January 8, 1946, to the late Buck and Alice Quade, and was the beloved wife of 60 years to James Alfred Abell. If you met her, you loved her. Janice was a gifted homemaker her whole life and raised four beautiful children; she is survived by her sons, Don Abell (Maria), Bryan Abell (Suzanne), Dave Abell, and her daughter, Sandy Gates (Manny); nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, as well as her brother, Ray Quade (Angel), and sister, Debbie Farrell (Gary). Janice had Polycystic Kidney Disease. Her son, Bryan, donated his kidney on March 25th, 2005, giving her another 19 ½ years of her beautiful life. She was preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Mattingly, and brothers, George Quade and John William Quade Jr. Janice loved family gatherings, cooking in her kitchen, going out to dinner, and traveling. Her love for travel started when she was in high school when she took her first big trip to New York City. The first family trip with all four kids in tow was to the Enchanted Forest, then Janice branched out even more. Yearly Ocean City trips for over 48 years with lots of family and friends. Other wonderful trips included flying to Hawaii when her son Don was stationed there for the Marine Corp; a Cruise to the Bahamas; numerous trips to Florida- she even made it to Key West. Niagara Falls was her bucket list, so of course that trip was done. When Al retired, they decided to take an adventure across country driving through many states and seeing so many wonderful things. They started driving through West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri (visited Branson), Kentucky, Kansas, Colorado (Rocky Mountains), Utah (loved the deserts), Nevada (Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe), California, and then coming back through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Panama City, Georgia, Carolinas, Virginia, and home sweet home. If Al and Janice were gone for a few days, you could find them at Dover Downs playing the slots. Relatives and friends are invited to Janice’s Life Celebration at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, 41590 Fenwick St, Leonardtown MD 20650 on October 4th, 2024, from 9AM to 10 AM, where a funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 10:00 AM with Deacon Ammon Ripple officiating.
