Services: A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 12:30 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Visitation: The Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 11:30AM - 12:30 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD wtih Rev. Walter G. Rourke officiating. Joseph “Joe” Gilbert Johnston, 64, of Lexington Park, MD, died October 12, 2011, in Callaway, MD. Born on December 8, 1946, he was the son of the late Joseph Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Owens) Johnston. He was the loving husband of the late Hiedemarie Erika (Doray) Johnston whom he married in Prince George’s County, Maryland on April 20, 1968 and preceded him in death on March 15, 1993. Mr. Johnston is survived by his children; Joseph Johnston, Jr. of Lexington Park, MD and Manuela Scruggs of Lusby, MD. Mr. Johnston is also survived by his siblings; Carol L. Jones of Bath, MA, Brenda J. Crook (Robert) of Bishopville, MD, John W. Johnston (Mary) of Lexington Park, MD, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Mr. Johnston moved from Oxon Hill, MD and worked as a construction worker. Mr. Johnston served in the United States Army from March 3, 1966 until he was honorable discharged in February 19, 1968. While serving in the army, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Rifleman Medal. Mr. Johnston belonged to the American Legion Post 248, Temple Hills, MD.; he also was an artist, and craftsman. . The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 11:30 Am – 12:30 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home where a Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 PM. with Rev. Walter Rourke officiating. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A, Leonardtown, MD.
