January 19, 1934 ~ May 28, 2024

Joseph Clarke, affectionately known as “Glenwood Clarke”, of Lusby, MD departed this life on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in Prince Frederick, MD. He was the youngest of ten children, born on January 19, 1934, Great Mills, MD to the late James Clarence Clarke and Mary Olive Cullison. Glenwood was the apple of the family’s eye and he always spoke lovingly of his parents and siblings. Glenwood was a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, MD and received his education through St. Mary’s County Public Schools. He was not particularly fond of attending every day and played hooky occasionally, only to be caught a time or two. As an adult he loved the game of baseball and softball, and he was one heck of a player. After high school Glenwood worked as an apprentice for a local electrician until he reached enlistment age. He joined the United States Air Force in 1952 and was stationed at various duty stations throughout the United States, in addition to serving his country in England and Thule Greenland, where he was promised a women behind every tree. In 1959 he married Linda Reeder, of Hollywood, MD and they raised five beautiful children throughout his period in the Air Force, until he retired his military service in 1972 at Andrews Air Force Base. In 1974 he accepted a position at the Patuxent Naval Base, Public Works as an electrician. Regretfully in 1982, Glenwood and Linda’s marriage came to an end. Later Glenwood met and married Dorothy Thomas in 1985, on his birthday January 19th. He wanted to get married on his birthday because he said this was one of the best birthday gifts he’s ever received, and thus began a modern day fairy tale. In addition to his parents, Glenwood is preceded in death by his son; Joseph Glenwood Clarke II; his brothers James Benjamin, John Richard, Joseph Donald, Francis Benedict, Thomas Maurice, and Calvin Aloysious; his sisters Mary Evelyn Corso, Wilhelmina Elizabeth Ford, and Marion Loretta Radcliff. Glenwood leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Dorothy; two daughters, Wanda Kohut of Oklahoma, and Donna Combs (David) of North Dakota; his two son, David Clarke of Oakley, MD, and John Clarke of Lexington Park, MD; his three step-sons, Darnell Wills of Chaptico, MD, Ricky Thomas (Kris) of Hughesville, MD, and David Thomas of Chaptico, MD; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Brandon Ferguson officiating. Interment will be private. Condolences may be made to the family at www.mgfh.com. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.A., Leonardtown, MD.
