Joseph “Joe” Howard Goddard, 84, of Leonardtown, MD passed away on September 27, 2016 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on December 15, 1931 in Leonardtown, MD, he was son of the late Mary Josephine (Spalding) Goddard and Clarence Alfred Goddard, Sr. Joe was the loving husband of Margaret Lorraine (Trossbach) Goddard, whom he married on August 12, 1953 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church Ridge, MD. Joe is survived by his children: Willie Goddard (Sandy Stankovich) of Leonardtown, MD, Buddy Goddard (Debbie) of Leonardtown, MD, John Paul Goddard (Mary) of Leonardtown, MD, James Goddard (Lorraine Dooley) of Leonardtown, MD, Leonard Goddard (Brenda) of La Plata, MD, Jeff Goddard (Sandy) of Hollywood, MD, Mary Jean Orwig (Chris) of Hollywood, MD, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Siblings: Alice Regina Abell of Leonardtown, MD, and Thomas Spalding of Leonardtown, MD. He was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Goddard of Leonardtown, MD, grandson John Lee Goddard of La Plata, MD and brothers; Benjamin Goddard of Leonardtown, MD, and Clarence Goddard, Jr. of Leonardtown, MD. He was a Lifelong St. Mary’s County resident and graduated from Great Mills High School in 1952. Joe was a St. Mary’s County Deputy Sheriff for 3 years, Civil Service police officer for 3 years, Civil Service Firefighter for 20 years, retiring in 1987, and a lifelong Farmer. Joe was the sponsor and promoter of the Lil Margaret’s Bluegrass Festival for 28 years. He enjoyed traveling and attending bluegrass festivals and loved to listen to bluegrass music.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM with prayers recited at 3:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady’s Catholic Church Leonardtown, MD with Father John Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Bob Brookins, Sam Goddard, Robert Lee Trossbach, Joe Trossbach, Bruce Ivitt, and David Dement. I surely wish I could have made it up to see Margaret & Joe at the Bluegrass festival Saturday Margaret, our thoughts and Prayers go up for you at this time. Although it was a long time ago, I did enjoy our times at your festivals; working in the heat!
